This year’s Big Ten soccer season will certainly be remembered for its parity. You know you have a well-rounded, well contested league when a No. 5 seed plays a No. 3 seed for the title. Yet again, the analysts and so-called ‘experts’ got it wrong as Damon Rensing and the Spartans produced heroics by the lake to claim their third Big Ten Tournament title, and their first since 2008. It was a tremendous tournament from start to finish. Game One saw the exit of my favorites Indiana, as Michigan State did the double over the Hoosiers with a thoroughly deserved […]

Penn State and Northwestern each claimed a share of the regular season crown and the Nittany Lions will come into the tournament as the No. 1 seed receiving the bye to the semi-finals due to their head-to-head victory over the Wildcats.
Penn State and Northwestern were both crowned Big Ten regular season champions on Saturday, as Michigan State failed to jump a Michigan hurdle in Ann Arbor. Losing to their close friends was one thing, but knowing that more clinical finishing would have giving them their first title since 2008 must be frustrating for Damon Rensing and his troops. On a positive note, they don’t have time to reflect as Indiana waits on Wednesday. This year’s Big Ten Tournament is impossible to call. Last year the Wildcats went undefeated in regular season play and thoroughly deserved all the accolades that came […]

Four teams now have regular season hopes, after Penn State, Northwestern and Indiana all failed to win. The highlight of last weekend’s games was the performance of Jay Chapman up front for Michigan State. Chapman registered his first collegiate goals with a classy hat trick in the Spartans’ impressive win over Indiana. The freshman’s first was a thing of beauty that riffled into the top corner from distance, his second displayed pace, composure and quality with a finish worthy of Premier […]

Aron Hyde and I predicted wins for Indiana and Northwestern on last week’s BTN Soccer Report, and it seemed like a logical assessment. But from a neutral’s standpoint, it’s a great thing that we were so wrong. With just one conference game to play, Penn State now finds itself at the summit of the standings. Northwestern moved to 3-0-0 in conference play, thanks to a goal that will haunt John Bluem for some time. As a defender, one of the first things you are taught is never, and I mean NEVER, let the ball bounce inside the six-yard box. Central defenders are tall for a reason – it’s their duty to attack crosses with passion and to take responsibility, and that didn’t happen at Lakeside Field. I must admit, I felt sorry for Alex Wimmer in goal for […]

INDIANA HOOSIERS At 9-2-1, and 3-0 in conference play, Todd Yeagley must be pleased with how the season has played out thus far.
