Who was the best male college athlete from the 2014 sports year? How about the best male U.S. Olympian? Those are just two of the six categories in which a current or former Big Ten athlete is nominated for at this year’s ESPY Awards on July 16 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. The award show gathers top athletes from around the world to commemorate the past year in sports. This year, there are seven current or former Big Ten athletes who are up for awards. In the first all-Big Ten NCAA volleyball title match, No. 2 Penn State took down rival and No. 12 Wisconsin, 3-1, Saturday night in Seattle. The national championship marks Penn State’s fifth in the last seven seasons and sixth all-time, which ties Stanford for the most titles in NCAA women’s volleyball history. Ariel Scott led the Nittany Lions with 21 kills, while Megan Courtney and Katie Slay added five blocks apiece. If there was a collective statement set out to be made by the Big Ten coaches and players coming into this year’s NCAA Tournament, then the nation is listening after Thursday night. For the first time in history, two Big Ten women’s volleyball teams will play for the NCAA national title. Penn State and Wisconsin advanced to Saturday’s championship match due in part to the challenges faced in what was arguably the most difficult year of Big Ten volleyball in the league’s history. It’s an all-Big Ten final in the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament as No. 12 seed Wisconsin and No. 2 seed Penn State both won Thursday night matches.
