Big Ten Geeks: Huskers Keep Hope Alive

Michigan State used a run out of intermission to create separation from Iowa in an eventual 10-point win. Both teams scored nearly at will in this one, but the Spartans’ outstanding three-point shooting masked a high turnover rate that is becoming worrisome. This has been Tom Izzo’s best-ever team at limiting turnovers (at least in the tempo-free era), but the past three games have seen Michigan State turn it over on nearly a quarter of its trips. Is this a temporary blip, the result of some long-absent players getting back into the groove? The Spartans had better hope so, as

Big Ten: average or great? We soon will find out

It seems every radio show I am on, I’m asked this question: Is the Big Ten the best league in America? Or, it is an average league with a lot of good teams? It’s a good question, and one that we soon will find out. The conference doesn’t appear to have an elite team. Michigan State was the closest thing to that template when the season dawned, but injuries have proven ruinous for the Spartans. Wisconsin has the fewest overall losses of any team with just five. But all five defeats have come in Big Ten play. Even worse, the

Big Ten Geeks: Michigan stands alone

Michigan won the Big Ten title outright last night on the strength of a shockingly easy win at Illinois. Sure, the Illini don’t have an impressive record, but John Groce’s team came into the matchup on a three-game winning streak, during which no opponent broke 0.9 points per trip. This was a hot team whose defense was absolutely stifling conference opponents. Talk had even begun of this Illinois team somehow sneaking back onto the bubble in the season’s final week. The Wolverines obviously didn’t get the memo. Michigan had an historic night from three, knocking down 16 of 23 from

Dienhart: Can Wisconsin earn a No. 1 seed?

Few teams in the nation are playing better than Wisconsin. In fact, the Badgers may have the stuff of a No. 1 NCAA seed. Really. Read on. The Badgers have ripped off seven wins in a row, improving to 24-5 overall and 11-5 in the Big Ten. The recent surge has pushed Wisconsin back into the Top 10, as the No. 9 Badgers are the highest-ranked team in the Big Ten. Wisconsin began the season on a roll, jetting to school-record 16-0 start that pushed it to No. 3 in the nation. That’s when things turned sour for Wisconsin. The
