Men’s hockey will become an official Big Ten sport in the 2013-14 academic year, so with that in mind, the Big Ten Conference office announced Thursday that its tournaments will be held at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn., in 2014 and 2016, and at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich., in 2015 and 2017.

(AP) Sarah Erickson scored two goals, Noora Raty stopped 42 shots and Minnesota beat Wisconsin 4-2 in the NCAA women’s hockey final on Sunday. Amanda Kessel and Emily West also scored for Minnesota, which won its third national title and first since the 2004-05 season.

The Internet’s hockey fans are abuzz today because it’s the 32nd anniversary of the day the U.S. Olympic hockey team beat the Soviet Union on the way to winning the gold medal (USA Hockey is doing a number of things on their Facebook page). The observation of the anniversary reminded us of two things related to the Big Ten. First, we recently profiled the late Herb Brooks on “Big Ten Icons” and you can watch the clip in this post.

Several Big Ten teams around the conference were in action on Friday night, including the Michigan-Northwestern wrestling match. In the season opening Big Ten dual, the Wolverines came out on top 28-9 over Northwestern.
