Dienhart: Keep an eye on these spots at Wisconsin

Gary Andersen’s debut in Madison was a rousing success—save for the stumble at the end that saw the Badgers lose their regular-season finale at home to Penn State and then fall to South Carolina in the bowl game. Still, there is a lot for Wisconsin to build on after last year’s 9-4 mark that saw the program’s run of three consecutive Rose Bowls come to end. Andersen needs to develop more big-play ability on offense with a passing game that ranked No. 9 in the Big Ten (197.1 ypg). That task is complicated by the loss of star receiver Jared

Video: J.J. Watt has a ridiculous post workout routine

Former Wisconsin star and current Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is without question one of the most intimidating Big Ten players in recent memory. But this post-workout video, posted by Watt on his Instagram account, takes the whole “intimidation factor” to another new level. Watt is shown lifting and flipping a 1,000 pound tire across what looks like a practice field. According to his post, Watt did this a total of 30 times. I’m not sure what’s more ridiculous, the fact that he is able to lift and flip a 1,000 pound tire 30 times, or the fact that

#BTNLive crew debates Friday night football games

Earlier this week, BTN.com senior writer Tom Dienhart wrote a piece about Big Ten football games being played on Friday nights. The idea generated plenty of feedback from Big Ten fans across the country. Some fans were in favor of the idea, but the majority were against it, which can be seen by reading Dienhart’s weekly mailbag. [ MORE: Friday night football? There are ‘lots of possibilities ] On Thursday’s edition of #BTNLive, Rick Pizzo, Glen Mason and Gerry DiNardo sounded off on the idea in a roundtable discussion. “I think if you’re going to play a Friday night game,

Mailbag: Big Ten football on Friday night?

Talk of the Big Ten considering the possibility of playing some Friday night football games has created a buzz. I wrote a story about it earlier this week. In the two-and-a-half years I’ve been doing this job, I never have gotten as much email on a subject. It’s not even close. And, judging by the majority of your correspondence, the idea of Friday night football doesn’t have great appeal for fear of the high school game being impacted. Still opinions vary. Have a look. NFL Combine Q&A: Charles Davis on Big Ten prospects

The NFL Combine wrapped up earlier this week. And the Big Ten was represented well as players tried to impress for the 2014 draft. I talked to NFL Network analyst Charles Davis to get his thoughts on some of the top Big Ten talent that was on display in Indianapolis. Last year, just one Big Ten player was selected in the first round when Wisconsin center Travis Frederick went at No. 31 to the Dallas Cowboys. Count on more Big Ten names getting drafted in the first round this year when the NFL Draft starts May 8 through May 10

#BTNLive poll: What about Friday night football?

Earlier this week, BTN.com’s Tom Dienhart wrote about an idea being kicked around where Big Ten football games could be played on Friday nights. Tonight on #BTNLive at 6 p.m. our crew will discuss this very topic, and they’re asking you to vote on the idea, too. The response to the idea on Dienhart’s post was strong – you can read the comments at the bottom here. Most of those readers not in favor of the idea didn’t want a college game to conflict with high school football, traditionally played on Friday nights. Tonight’s show hosts are Rick Pizzo, Gerry

Which former B1G player would make a good owner?

Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson, a former star at Wisconsin, recently told The Wall Street Journal that he would like to be an owner of a professional sports team one day, whether it’s baseball, football, or maybe even both. “For me, I’d love to get around to as many people as I can,” Wilson said. “Because at the end of the day, I want to learn as much as I can so that way, in my future — down the road after playing 20 years hopefully for the Seahawks — I can do that.” Here he is doing that

Friday night football? There are 'lots of possibilities'

Talk about night football games continues to churn to the point where Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany is soliciting input about playing Friday night games. Hey, it’s all about the almighty TV dollar, in case you didn’t know. We have seen some schools in recent years play season-opening games on Friday nights, including Indiana, Minnesota and Michigan State. ESPN currently airs games on Friday nights, but they typically are unappealing contests from lesser leagues. San Jose State vs. Utah State doesn’t really move the needle, if you know what I mean. The Big Ten could step in and own Friday

New Wisconsin RB coach: 'This is Tailback U'

New Wisconsin running backs coach Thomas Brown is excited about his new role, and for good reason. Brown, previously at Marshall, gets to coach star Melvin Gordon, in addition to Corey Clement, who produced as a freshman. Brown is so impressed by Wisconsin’s backs and its history of standout backs, from Alan Ameche to Ron Dayne to Montee Ball, that he called the Badgers “Tailback U” in a team’s YouTube video. “This is an unbelievable place,” Brown said. “I’m really excited about it. This is Tailback U.” What do you think? As far as the Big Ten is concerned, the

Gerry DiNardo sounds off on unionization efforts

There is a movement afoot to unionize Northwestern football players, with on-going hearings taking place on the subject in Chicago. The NU players are being supported by the College Athletes Players Association (CAPA). And former Wildcats quarterback Kain Colter is spearheading the cause, having already testified before the National Labor Relations Board. Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald testified today. I talked to BTN analyst Gerry DiNardo—a former head coach at Vanderbilt, LSU and Indiana–about the unionization effort. [ MORE: Dienhart: Football player union case worth watching ] Here is DiNardo in his own words (read more on his Twitter timeline, @gerrydinardo):
