(AP) South Carolina rebuilt its program with a defensive philosophy, and it sure paid off on Monday night. Markeshia Grant scored 21 points and the fifth-seeded Gamecocks forced 20 turnovers in a 72-61 victory over No. 4 seed Purdue in the second round of the NCAA women’s tournament.
A Big Ten-record seven teams were selected to the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship field of 64, it was announced on Monday night. Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue will represent the conference in the tournament, marking the first time seven Big Ten teams have advanced to the tourney, one more than the previous record of six (1996, 2002, 2003, 2004). (AP) KK Houser scored 19 points to help No. 21 Purdue defeat No. 24 Nebraska 74-70 in two overtimes in the Big Ten tournament final on Sunday. Houser, from Lincoln, Neb., also had five steals against her hometown team. Chantel Poston had 10 points and 11 rebounds and Sam Ostarello added eight points and 10 rebounds for the fourth-seeded Boilermakers (24-8), who won the tournament for the eighth time in 17 years. Purdue’s Brittany Rayburn, who scored nine points and hit the game winner in the semifinal victory against Penn State, was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. Read the full AP recap.
Brittany Rayburn hit the game-winning shot in the final seconds to lift No. 25 Purdue past No. 12 Penn State, 68-66, in the semifinals of the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Boilermakers will play Nebraska, which beat three-time reigning champ Ohio State (recap), in the title game at 4 p.m. ET Sunday.
