Penn State and Wisconsin advanced to the the NCAA national semifinals Saturday night. The Nittany Lions defeated Stanford, 3-2, to extend their winning streak to 23 straight matches, while the Badgers topped Big Ten rival Purdue, 3-1, to earn their first Final Four berth since 2000. Nebraska fell to Texas, 3-0, in the other Big Ten match. Four Big Ten volleyball teams advanced to the NCAA regional finals Friday night. Nebraska, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin all recorded Sweet 16 victories, with the Nittany Lions downing Michigan State and Purdue sweeping Illinois. Minnesota fell to Stanford. Coaches, players and fans can all agree that the Big Ten represents the best caliber of volleyball in all the nation. The conference proved that on Sunday, as an unprecedented seven teams reached regional play, setting a new NCAA record. Big Ten teams make up nearly half of the field remaining in the tournament, as the Sweet 16 features all but one league team that made the postseason. After an unpredictable year that saw possibly the strongest collection of teams in conference history, the postseason has finally arrived. The Big Ten tied a conference record on Sunday when, for the fifth time in league history, eight teams were selected to the NCAA Volleyball Championship. Penn State took the second overall seed in the bracket, with Nebraska following a No. 8, Minnesota No. 10, Wisconsin No. 12 and Illinois earning the No. 13 seed. Two weeks remain in the regular season. Arms are tired, players are sick, teams know each other’s tendencies, and the tournament is on the horizon. The Big Ten title appears to be undecided until the conference’s final weekend and barring shocking upsets, which have been prevalent this season, November 30 should be the long-awaited matchup volleyball fans have been clamoring for. But with Penn State and Nebraska, the Big Ten’s top teams, not meeting for another week-and-a-half, it’s time to look at the postseason hopes for the rest of the league’s members.
