Power Rankings: Surging Iowa shoots up list

With six schools off and just four games that featured no upsets, there was little movement in my weekly Big Ten power rankings, presented by ArcelorMittal. Iowa was the biggest winner, jumping three spots from No. 9 to No. 6. Conversely, Minnesota fell like a rock from No. 6 to No. 10. Here is my latest Power Poll. Tom's Take: Week 5 honors, grades, top 10 & more

There were just four games this Saturday, but that doesn’t mean there was any lack of action. Ohio State showed that it means business, and Iowa’s methodical victory at Minnesota sent a message: The Hawkeyes are over the doldrums of a 4-8 2012 season. Here is my wrap up on Week 5 in the Big Ten. Biggest surprise: Iowa. The Hawkeyes dispatched Minnesota with relative ease, using dominating play in the trenches on both sides of the ball to smother the Golden Gophers in the battle for Floyd of Rosedale. This shocked me. I thought Minnesota not only would have

Best of Week 5: UW-OSU has 'game of the year' feel

There are just four games this Saturday—FOUR! Quite a come down from the 10- and 12-game weeks we had become accustomed to at the start of the season. The reason for the truncated schedule? Byes. Half of the teams are off. Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State and Northwestern all will catch their breath following four non-conference games. This Saturday does at least have a marquee game, with Wisconsin playing at Ohio State in a huge Leaders Division clash. And Floyd of Rosedale is on the line with Iowa playing at Minnesota. The other two clashes are non-league tilts:

Dienhart: Get my Week 5 Big Ten previews

Conference play kicked off last week, with Wisconsin blasting Purdue. This Saturday, there are two more Big Ten games: Iowa at Minnesota and Wisconsin at Ohio State. Otherwise, there are just two other tilts, both non-conference games: Miami (OH) at Illinois and Northern Illinois at Purdue. But, quantity of games is compensated for by the quality of games. Wisconsin’s trip to Ohio State is an unabashed marquee contest that will go a long way toward determining the Leaders Division title. And Iowa’s junket to Minnesota is a key Legends Division clash that will help determine early pecking in order in

Dienhart: My best of 2013 Big Ten noncon season

We have reached the one-third mark of the 2013 season. Where has the time gone? Last time I looked up from my keyboard, the kids still were splashing in the neighborhood swimming pool and the Cubs were eliminated from playoff contention. Wait, that last item happened back in June. Forget it. You get the point. Four weeks of the 2013 season are in the rearview mirror, as we head into the heart of conference play with only three non-leagues left: Northern Illinois at Purdue; Miami (Ohio) at Illinois; BYU at Wisconsin. Here is my one-third report. [ MORE: View’s

And just like that, the nonconference portion of the Big Ten football schedule is behind us. Now, there are still a trio of noncon games left, but it’s all about Big Ten matchups the rest of the way. With 11 of the 12 teams four games into their 2013 season, there’s no better time to release our annual noncon All-Big Ten Team.
