Purdue starts slow, recovers to drill Western Illinois

Purdue used its efficient offense to power past Western Illinois 81-67 on Wednesday at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette in the College Basketball Invitational. Purdue (16-17) hit 58 percent of its field goals (31-of-53). The Boilermakers went into the locker room with the momentum and came out of the second half flying as well. The tournament opener between Illinois and Minnesota didn’t offer much in the way of aesthetically pleasing play, but a buzzer beater has a way of upping the entertainment value. Time and again, Nebraska got right to the rim for easy baskets off of drives. Tim Miles’ squad shot 44.7 percent and hit 12-of-17 free throws. Conversely, Purdue shot 40 percent and hit just 7-of-14 free throws. That basically was the difference in a close game. The first day of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament had it’s share of excitement. Illinois beat Minnesota 51-49 with a Brandon Paul jumper at the buzzer while Michigan handled Penn State, 83-66.
