Tom's Take: My Week 1 honors, grades, top 10 & more

One week is in the books. There was good, and there was bad. Good: Northwestern went to Cal and rallied for a big comeback win. Bad: Purdue looked awful in a rout at Cincinnati. Here are my thoughts, ruminations, honors, grades and numbers from an exciting and eventful opening week around the Big Ten. Biggest surprise: Northwestern taking it to Cal with a 44-30 victory in Berkeley. Yes, the Wildcats are supposed to be good. But they took it to the Golden Bears on the road, playing a physical brand of football and making big plays on defense. Northwestern sent

Twitter: Purdue QB Rob Henry apologizes for poor play

There were few positives to take from Purdue’s 42-7 season-opening loss at Cincinnati, and Purdue quarterback Rob Henry more than accepted his share of the blame for the performance. Hours after the game, Henry took to Twitter to apologize to the Purdue community and tell them that he was taking a break from Twitter “because there obviously needs to be a lot more work done.” Henry went 18-of-35 for 161 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss. He did have a rushing touchdown, Purdue’s lone score on the day. Here are Henry’s tweets: I apologize to all my

Dienhart: Week 1 Questions? Yes. Answers? Not yet.

The Big Ten took the lid off the 2013 season last night, with Minnesota and Indiana recording resounding victories by registering point totals that would have tilted a pinball machine. The unveilings continue tonight, with Michigan State playing host to Western Michigan, and then the other nine schools play Saturday. Here are questions I have for each of the 10 schools yet to kickoff. [ MORE: Who wins Week 1 games? Pick your winners! ] ILLINOIS Will the Fighting Illini dominant a FCS foe? Well, maybe “dominate” is too strong of a word. I’ll settle for a “convincing” effort vs.

Photos: Big Ten fans honor College Colors Day

Today is College Colors Day, the day when people across the nation dress in their college school colors to celebrate the beginning of a new college football season. To be fair, the season kicked off Thursday night, with Indiana and Minnesota rolling to victories, and it continues tonight. But it’s all about celebrating that first Saturday of the season on the last work day of the week. To recognize the day, we went to Twitter and asked Big Ten fans to snap a shot of how they’re honoring the annual celebration. See some of the photos below. @BigTenNetwork all of

Video: You have to see these new BTN commercials

Five years ago, there was our memorable recruiting ad. You know, the one with Big Ten coaches on the couch trying to convince you to play for them. This year, we have an equally great set of spots to promote our Saturday football coverage, from pregame to postgame. The ads once again feature the coaches, only this time in more of a coaching role. See all three ads in this post. Yes, the offense will be great; but improved defense will be the key. Merriman: Nebraska. The Huskers get Michigan State and Northwestern at home and skip both Ohio State and Wisconsin this year.

Best of Week 1: Stay up late to catch NU at Cal

Every season teems with promise. But this one glimmers a bit more brightly for the Big Ten, as No. 2 Ohio State looks primed to make a run at the BCS national championship. And several other schools dot the preseason polls, like Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Northwestern. The Big Ten has a full slate of action for the opening week, with all 12 schools in action. There are five games vs. the MAC– Michigan (Central Michigan), Iowa (Northern Illinois), Wisconsin (UMass), Ohio State (Buffalo) and Michigan State (Western Michigan). But beware: The MAC has twice as many wins against the
