Reigning NCAA champ PSU picked as Big Ten favorite

Defending NCAA and Big Ten Champion Penn State was chosen as the conference favorite for the 2014 volleyball season, as voted on by the Big Ten coaches. After claiming their sixth national title last season, the Nittany Lions top the preseason poll for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. Nebraska, which finished second in the Big Ten last season, was picked to finish second in 2014. After appearing in the NCAA championship match last season, Wisconsin was selected third this season, while Illinois was picked fourth in the voting. Purdue rounded out the top five in the preseason

Seven Big Ten names up for ESPY Award on July 16

Who was the best male college athlete from the 2014 sports year? How about the best male U.S. Olympian? Those are just two of the six categories in which a current or former Big Ten athlete is nominated for at this year’s ESPY Awards on July 16 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. This time, the Nittany Lions, who have won five of the last seven national titles, dropped rival Wisconsin, 3-1, in what was the first all-Big Ten final. Penn State wins record-tying sixth NCAA title

In the first all-Big Ten NCAA volleyball title match, No. 2 Penn State took down rival and No. 12 Wisconsin, 3-1, Saturday night in Seattle. The national championship marks Penn State’s fifth in the last seven seasons and sixth all-time, which ties Stanford for the most titles in NCAA women’s volleyball history. Ariel Scott led the Nittany Lions with 21 kills, while Megan Courtney and Katie Slay added five blocks apiece.
