It’s amazing what a week can do. Just ask Illinois. Fresh off a week in which the Illini upset No. 1 Indiana and tripped up No. 18 Minnesota, John Groce’s team, for all intents and purposes, saved its season. Dylan Talley had 16 points and Nebraska pulled away from Penn State early in the second half to take a 67-53 win Saturday night. Nebraska (12-12, 3-8 Big Ten) opened the second half with an 12-2 spurt that put the Cornhuskers up 41-26 on David Rivers‘ free throws with 16:50 left.

Are you ready for some spring football? Hey, it’s not the real thing with packed stadiums, marching bands, tailgaters and cheerleaders all pouring their hearts into a regular season game. But, it’s the next best thing to cure your football fix. Northwestern is the first to start, opening spring drills on Feb. 27. Minnesota is the last to open, starting on March 26.

This has been a trying season for Penn State. You don’t have to remind D.J. Newbill who has overcome bigger things in his life, including a transfer and the loss of his mother. The 6-4 sophomore is doing his part to get the Nittany Lions on track. How tough has it been? Penn State is 0-10 in the Big Ten and 8-14 overall. Not having star point guard Tim Frazier has made matters challenging for Newbill and Penn State, as Frazier is out with a left Achilles tendon injury suffered just four games into the season.
