NCAA Releases Statement on Penn State

NCAA president Mark Emmert sent out this statement on Thursday: “Regarding the ongoing Penn State criminal investigation, the NCAA is actively monitoring developments and assessing appropriate steps moving forward. The NCAA will defer in the immediate term to law enforcement officials since this situation involved alleged crimes. As the facts are established through the justice system, we will determine whether Association bylaws have been violated and act accordingly. The Penn State board of trustees press conference, which announced the dismissal of Joe Paterno and University President Graham Spanier (read the AP story), will air on BTN beginning at 2 a.m. ET Thursday. Repeats of the presser will run until 11 a.m., at which time the press conference to announce Tom Bradley, formerly the defensive coordinator, as the interim head coach is scheduled to begin. Penn State Fires Paterno, Spanier

The Penn State Board of Trustees announced Wednesday night that football coach Joe Paterno and president Graham Spanier have been terminated in the wake of the recent scandal at Penn State. Read PSU.edu’s release. Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley will serve as the interim coach. Paterno, 84 and in his 46th season as the head coach, announced earlier in the day that he was going to retire following the season.
