Wisconsin and Penn State each notched big wins in the opening round of the NCAA men’s soccer tournament. Northwestern and Indiana, the reigning NCAA and Big Ten champions, fell to Akron 3-2. Catch up on all of Thursday’s NCAA men’s soccer action in this post.
Two Big Ten men’s soccer teams advanced to Sunday’s championship match with semifinal wins at host site Ohio State on Friday. In the first semifinal, Indiana beat Penn State 1-0 in an overtime shootout. The Hoosiers shot a perfect 5-of-5 in the shootout. In the second semifinal, Michigan State junior Fatai Alashe scored the game’s lone goal as the Spartans defeated Northwestern, 1-0.
After winning its second consecutive title, Penn State earned the No. 1 seed and first-round bye of the 2013 Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by Ohio State University, with the opening-round matchups beginning Wednesday, Nov. 13.
