Big Ten releases 2013-14 conference hoops slate

The Big Ten announced its 2013-14 men’s basketball conference schedule Wednesday afternoon, and there will be at least 49 games televised by CBS Sports or an ESPN Network. Remaining network assignments will be announced at a later date. The Big Ten schedule will begin with four games on Tuesday, Dec. 31, including a New Year’s Eve doubleheader on ESPN2 featuring defending Big Ten Tournament Champion Ohio State at Purdue, followed by reigning Big Ten Champion Indiana at Illinois. Times, networks set for Big Ten/ACC Challenge

The times and dates have been finalized for the 15th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge, which will be played Tuesday Dec. 3 and Wednesday, Dec. 4. See when and on what network your Big Ten team will play in this year’s event inside. [ RELATED: Our guy ranks the 2013 Big Ten/ACC Challenge pairings ] This year’s Challenge includes all 12 Big Ten teams and 12 of the ACC’s 15 schools, including first-year members Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Clemson, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, the ACC’s three bottom teams from 2012-13, sit out of the event. Last year, the two conferences

Penn State men's hoops to host Princeton in Rec Hall

Penn State basketball is back at Rec Hall–for one game, at least. Wednesday, Penn State announced it will host Princeton on Saturday, Dec. 14 in its old gym. [ GoPSUSports.com: Penn State basketball to ‘Return to Rec’ ] “This is a very exciting day for our program, alumni and fans of Penn State basketball,” Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said in a release. “I watched Penn State basketball in Rec Hall when I was younger, and it was electric.” The game will mark the program’s first at Rec Hall since the Nittany Lions steamrolled Wisconsin, 79-50, on Jan. 7, 1996.

Ex-Penn State G Marshall transfers to Arizona State

Former Penn State guard Jermaine Marshall is planning to transfer to Arizona State. Marshall, the Nittany Lions’ second-leading scorer last season, announced in May that he was forgoing his final year of eligibility to pursue a professional career overseas. The 6-foot-4 guard is now headed to Arizona State instead, as long as he fulfills requirements to graduate this summer. Marshall averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists as a junior at Penn State. If he does graduate and become eligible, Marshall would likely be a starter for the Sun Devils alongside Jahii Carson in what could become one of

Penn State to wear new Nike uniform in 2013-14

Get ready for another Nike “Aerographic” basketball uniform. Penn State will wear the uniform design (WATCH reveal) in 2013-14, the team confirmed Thursday. [ RELATED: Nebraska football reveals alternate uniform for UCLA game ] The Big Ten is no stranger to this Nike design. Illinois, Michigan State, Ohio State and Purdue, other Big Ten teams outfitted by Nike, have rocked the look the past couple of seasons, while Minnesota implemented it this past season. Iowa also will debut the design this season. Like Iowa’s recent makeover, Penn State’s includes the design on the back of the jersey (Nittany Lion logo), different font

Jermaine Marshall to forgo senior season at Penn State

Penn State expected big things out of senior Jermaine Marshall in 2013-14. Not only was the guard scheduled to be the Big Ten’s second-leading returning scorer (15.3), behind only teammate D.J. Newbill, but he would have been a key cog to Penn State’s possibly elite backcourt. [ GoPSUSports.com: Marshall to forgo senior season of eligibility ] Marshall, however, won’t be around to team with Newbill, 2011-12 All-Big Ten honoree Tim Frazier and Pitt transfer John Johnson this upcoming season. The guard announced Wednesday that he will pursue a pro career following graduation this summer. “This is a difficult decision,” Marshall

Dienhart: Just say 'No' to divisions for hoops

At its spring meetings in Chicago, the Big Ten may discuss if it should have divisional play in basketball, as Rutgers and Maryland are set to join the league in 2014 to make the conference a 14-team entity. My advice: The Big Ten should take a lead from the other major conferences—ACC (12 teams), SEC (14), Pac-12 (12), old Big East (15), Atlantic 10 (16)–and not have divisional play. Yes, having divisions would make for some fun races down the stretch, as more teams likely would be jockeying for division championships. But in the SEC’s instance, it had some years

Ranking 2013 Big Ten/ACC Challenge games

It’s time to talk the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The event might be six-plus months away, but the 2013 matchups were released Wednesday afternoon. This year’s event is Dec. 3-4, with six games each night, and it features first-year ACC members Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. That last part, the addition of the three perennial Big East contenders, makes this event even more intriguing and far more daunting for the Big Ten. Not only does the ACC gain those three teams, but with 15 teams total, it gets to keep last year’s three-worst teams (Clemson, Virginia Tech & Wake Forest) out
