Dienhart: What kind of coach fits at Penn State?

Penn State made it official today: Bill O’Brien is leaving after two seasons. Now, the search is on for his replacement, which was a point of today’s press conference by Penn State athletic director Dave Joyner. This is and always will be one of the best jobs in America, so there will be no shortage of quality candidates. Here are my top choices. But in reading this, it’s important to remember that O’Brien seemingly came out of nowhere when he was hired. Along those lines, keep Ball State’s Pete Lembo on your radar. Penn State first-team All-America wide receiver Allen Robinson will enter the 2014 National Football League Draft. The 2012 and 2013 Big Ten Richter-Howard Receiver of the Year, Robinson earned seven All-America honors after a stellar 2013 season. The standout junior was selected a first-team All-American by CBSSports.com, Sporting News and Phil Steele’s College Football, a second-team honoree by the FWAA, SI.com and Athlon Sports and a third-team honoree by the Associated Press. In a statement, Robsinson said: “It was a great honor to play at Penn State. I am blessed to have played with, and for, the people in the

Season Review: PSU cards another winning season

Bill O’Brien continued to deliver results in his second season in State College, Pa., despite being hampered with severe NCAA sanctions. O’Brien debuted with an 8-4 mark (6-2 Big Ten) in 2012 and followed with a 7-5 record (4-4 Big Ten) this season. But perhaps Penn State’s biggest win this fall came off the field in September, when the NCAA announced it was lifting its scholarship limits beginning in 2014. Five additional scholarships will be restored starting next year and will continue to increase by five until the school is back to the full allocation of 25 initial scholarships in

Video: Pete Thamel, on Bill O'Brien's future

Penn State’s Bill O’Brien is a hot commodity, and he’ll remain that way as long as he stays at Penn State. Last year, NFL teams inquired about O’Brien following his remarkable job in leading the Nittany Lions to an 8-4 season. Reports indicate there will be more NFL executives pursuing O’Brien this offseason. And the fact O’Brien recently had the NFL buyout in his contract lowered only fuels that notion. Watch our interview with SI’s Pete Thamel discussing O’Brien’s future above and see our team’s thoughts below.
