Three Big Ten teams, headlined by Big Ten tournament champion Illinois, made the 2011 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship, it was announced Monday. Ohio State and Big Ten regular-season champ Penn State join the Illini in the field. For Penn State, this marks the program’s 17th consecutive NCAA berth. The weekend saw several of the conference’s soccer and field hockey teams in action. Senior keeper Jeremy Clark tallied his fourth shutout of the year and red-shirt freshman Ryan Keener headed in the game’s only goal as Michigan State (6-7-4, 2-2-2) took back the Big Bear Trophy with a 1-0 victory over rival Michigan. Moving to field hockey, Penn State (13-5, 4-2) earned a 4-1 victory over Michigan State on Sunday to close out the regular season and clinch a tie for second place in the Big Ten. The No. 24 Penn State women’s soccer team overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit with a trio of lightning-strike goals in a 3-1 victory over Ohio State on Thursday at Jeffrey Field. Taylor Schram notched the tying goal 15 seconds after halftime and Kori Chapic headed home the game-winner 1:44 later. Watch the highlights now.
