With the Big Ten Title reclaimed by Penn State this past weekend what remains to be decided in the regular season’s final week is whether or not an eighth Big Ten team is headed to the postseason and which conference members will be hosting the first two rounds of the tournament. Northwestern and Wisconsin both split their weekend matches meaning each will finish with a record above .500, meeting the minimum attractive levels for the NCAA
There is little doubt that the Big Ten has the most passionate and largest fan bases of any conference in the nation. Six of the top ten teams nationally in average attendance this season reside in the Big Ten, including four of the top five. Nebraska has the most dedicated fan base in the country with 175 consecutive sell outs of the NU Coliseum, the longest sell-out streak of any women’s collegiate sport. The conference’s two most successful programs, Nebraska and Penn State, draw the largest attendance numbers and create two of the best environments for volleyball you could hope
The No. 7 Penn State field hockey team continued its hunt for the Big Ten Championship Friday afternoon, defeating No. 21 Ohio State 3-0 for the fourth conference win of the season. The Nittany Lions, now 13-3 overall with a 4-1 mark in the Big Ten, currently rest atop the Big Ten standings. The No. 1 Penn State women’s volleyball team (19-1, 9-0 Big Ten) defeated No. 20 Ohio State, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-22), on Wednesday night. Michigan’s women’s volleyball team wins in straight sets with the upset victory over Illinois, 3-0, in Ann Arbor on Wednesday night. No. 4 Penn State (12-2-0, 6-0-0) used three goals in a six-minute span to secure a 5-2 victory over Indiana on Sunday at Jeffrey Field. Freshmen Jaylyn Odermann and Katie Kraeutner led the Nebraska soccer team (1-3-0) to its first win of the 2012 season on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field with a 2-0 shutout of the New Mexico Lobos.
