Volleyball Report: B1G poised to make noise in NCAA

After an unpredictable year that saw possibly the strongest collection of teams in conference history, the postseason has finally arrived. The Big Ten tied a conference record on Sunday when, for the fifth time in league history, eight teams were selected to the NCAA Volleyball Championship. Penn State took the second overall seed in the bracket, with Nebraska following a No. 8, Minnesota No. 10, Wisconsin No. 12 and Illinois earning the No. 13 seed. Those five will host first- and second-round matches at home, while Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue will play matches on the road. [ MORE: View

Volleyball Report: Breaking down PSU at Nebraska

The final week of the Big Ten season is upon us, and Penn State has once again claimed at least a share of the Big Ten title. The rest of the conference’s teams, they have secured their plans for the postseason, with the exception of Northwestern. The Wildcats have earned a trip the tournament, in my opinion, but finishing on a four-match losing streak would make the team a less attractive pick for the selection committee, especially with eight Big Ten teams already in. Northwestern needs to take one of these last two against Illinois and Wisconsin to solidify its

Volleyball Report: Illinois surging at right time

Two weeks remain in the regular season. Arms are tired, players are sick, teams know each other’s tendencies, and the tournament is on the horizon. The Big Ten title appears to be undecided until the conference’s final weekend and barring shocking upsets, which have been prevalent this season, November 30 should be the long-awaited matchup volleyball fans have been clamoring for. But with Penn State and Nebraska, the Big Ten’s top teams, not meeting for another week-and-a-half, it’s time to look at the postseason hopes for the rest of the league’s members. It would seem safe to put the eight

Volleyball Report: Spartans continue strong start

A week ago, the Big Ten witnessed an unprecedented five out of six matches reach five sets in one night. The plethora of extended matches indicated the strength of the conference but still seemed rare enough to not be duplicated in the short term. Flash-forward to last Friday, and the count had reached nine of the last 11 matches, and seemed likely to be pushed to 10 of 12. Purdue’s fourth-set comeback against Illinois halted another night where all but one match went the distance, but it reiterated the evaporation of a talent gap in the league. Out of 36

Volleyball Report: Five-setter here, five-setter there

“The margin for error in our conference is as thin as it has ever been.” Michigan head coach Mark Rosen made that statement heading into last Saturday night, a night that may have represented a first in Big Ten women’s volleyball. All 12 teams were in action, and at the end of the evening, all but two would play nerve-racking 5-set matches. Five-setters in a conference as strong as the Big Ten have been commonplace over the league’s history, but for one day to feature nearly every team in a race to 15 points, it could mark the beginning of

Penn State voted preseason B1G volleyball favorite

Defending Big Ten champion Penn State was chosen as the conference favorite for the 2013 season, as voted on by the Big Ten coaches, it was announced Friday. Earning the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championship last season, the Nittany Lions top the poll for the eighth time in the last nine seasons. Minnesota, which finished tied for second in the Big Ten in 2012, was voted to finish second this season. Michigan, which advanced to the NCAA semifinals last season, was selected to finish third this year, while Nebraska, which also finished the 2012 conference season tied for
