Maryland tops Big Ten men's soccer preseason poll

The Big Ten Conference announced its 2014 men’s soccer preseason coaches’ poll and players to watch list on Wednesday, with Maryland claiming the top spot in its first year in the conference. The Terrapins reached the national championship game last season. Maryland concluded the 2013 campaign with a 17-4-5 record, and has advanced to the NCAA Tournament 19 times since 1994. Michigan State, Indiana advance to B1G title match

Two Big Ten men’s soccer teams advanced to Sunday’s championship match with semifinal wins at host site Ohio State on Friday. In the first semifinal, Indiana beat Penn State 1-0 in an overtime shootout. The Hoosiers shot a perfect 5-of-5 in the shootout. In the second semifinal, Michigan State junior Fatai Alashe scored the game’s lone goal as the Spartans defeated Northwestern, 1-0.
