Northwestern followed up their regular-season title with the Big Ten Tounament title. In the latest installment of “BTN Soccer Report,” host Kevin Egan and analyst Aron Hyde recap the tournament and highlight Northwestern’s championship run. (BigTen.org) Indiana and Northwestern have earned berths to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship, the selection committee announced on Monday. The selections mark the ninth straight year that two or more conference teams have earned bids to the tournament, which begins on Thursday.
Northwestern used two second-half goals to complete the Big Ten sweep Sunday, defeating Penn State 2-1 in the finals of the 2011 Big Ten Tournament. After winning the Big Ten regular season title last weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich., the Wildcats are also tournament champions for the first time. Northwestern advanced to the Big Ten Conference Men’s Soccer Championship by defeating Indiana 1-1 (3-2 on penalty kicks) on Friday at Michigan. Wisconsin could come back and fell 1-0 to Penn State in the second semifinal. The championship match will be played Sunday at noon ET and the game will air live on the Big Ten Network. The tournament will be held on Michigan’s campus in Ann Arbor, Mich., with opening-round matchups played on Wednesday. The tournament winner will earn the Big Ten’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
