Big Ten Geeks: This was a huge one for Indiana

Indiana picked up a huge victory over previously unbeaten and No. 3 Wisconsin on Tuesday night. The significance of this win for Indiana cannot be overstated. This is a team that entered the night without a single quality win, a team that would not have made the NCAA tournament had the season ended just before this game. Now, the Hoosiers have a top-notch win and a clear path to a 9-9 conference record, which would seemingly be enough to make the tournament. There’s still a chance that Indiana is the second coming of last year’s Iowa Hawkeyes, with a weak

Big Ten Geeks: Iowa crashes the party

In case any doubters remained—Iowa is for real, as proven by its 10-point win in Columbus. Granted, this was probably more like a six- or eight-point win if Ohio State isn’t fouling desperately at the end. But that’s splitting hairs, especially because most teams in that position do the same thing. Frankly, if you’re looking for reasons to call this result a fluke, you might be looking for a while. Iowa wasn’t red-hot from the outside (29 percent on 3s), Ohio State wasn’t atrocious at the free-throw line (71 percent), and both teams shot roughly the same number of free

Bonus video: Preview Sunday's 'Journey' episode

When Chris Collins took the job at Northwestern, he was aware of the overall perception of the basketball program. “I’m taking over a program that’s been right on the cusp,” Collins said. “They just haven’t been quite able to get over the hump.” Collins is one of several featured stories on “The Journey: Big Ten Basketball 2014,” which debuts at 9:30 p.m. ET Sunday. Here’s what we cover on this Friday: Three teams on the rise, three teams sinking, and three things I learned this week. We also cover my three most impressive wins from the past seven days and the three biggest games coming up in the next week. Let’s do this. Three Stocks to Buy Minnesota. How ‘bout those

Big Ten Geeks: Better to be lucky than good?

Wednesday and Thursday brought some interesting results on the Big Ten hardwood. Let’s jump right in. After Michigan’s last road game, we opined that the Wolverines were fortunate to leave Minneapolis with a victory. As if to troll us, John Beilein’s team found an even luckier way to win a Big Ten road game, this time in Nebraska’s brand new Pinnacle Bank Arena. This one point victory included a half-court make at the halftime buzzer by Derrick Walton, then a point-blank miss at the end of regulation by Nebraska’s Leslee Smith. If either of those shots goes the way you’d
