Big Ten Geeks: Penn State springs the upset of the season

With 10:39 to play in the Bryce Jordan Center, Michigan’s Jon Horford finished an easy dunk off an inbounds play to put Penn State down 15 points. At that very moment, KenPom’s win probability gave the Wolverines a 99.3 percent chance of leaving town with the victory. In other words, given the time, score, and team qualities, you’d expect a game replayed 150 times from that exact situation to end with Michigan losing only once. Then Jermaine Marshall happened. The 6-4 junior took over the game, scoring 16 points the rest of the way to spearhead an incredible offensive finish

Smith, Thomas power No. 15 Buckeyes to win

Lenzelle Smith scored a season-high 24 points, Deshaun Thomas added 19 and No. 15 Ohio State used a late run to beat Northwestern 63-53 on Thursday night. The Buckeyes (21-7, 11-5 Big Ten) moved one-half game ahead of Michigan and took sole possession of fourth place in the Big Ten with another difficult win over a team that’s given it fits in recent years. BTN to go inside NCAA tourney selection process

Greg Shaheen, who ran the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for 12 years, will join BTN host Mike Hall to take fans inside the tournament selection process, from who’s in the room to where the top seeds are headed and why, to how Big Ten teams stack up in 2013. The 60-minute special, Inside the Selection Process, airs at 9 p.m. ET Monday. Shaheen, former NCAA executive vice president of Championships and Alliances, is credited with having a significant impact on the tournament’s success. He’ll talk about such things as how the committee is assembled, how it handles multiple teams from one conference, and

Big Ten Geeks: Rise of the Gophers

Indiana suffered another road loss to a previously scuffling squad, this time falling at Minnesota by four points. Much has been said about Cody Zeller’s lack of offensive production on this night (nine points, four turnovers, five fouls), but the Hoosiers scored quite well with their big man scuffling. Instead, it was the defensive end where Indiana lost this game, most especially on the defensive glass. The Gophers retrieved a ridiculous 53 percent of their misses and finished nearly every rim opportunity they got. Combined with a surprisingly low turnover rate, it enabled Minnesota to hoist 11 more shots than

Power Rankings: Spartans fall in wake of 0-2 week

How tough is the Big Ten this season? A week ago, several people thought Michigan State might be the Big Ten’s top team. Today, following back-to-back losses, the Spartans land at No. 4 on my latest Power Rankings. Where does your team land? Find out in this post. Oh, and feel free to send me your thoughts, either in the comment box in this post or on Twitter (@BTNBrentYarina). [ RELATED: Where is your Big Ten team ranked in latest national polls? ] 1. Big Ten Geeks: Cupcakes aren't good for you

Any sober look at Iowa in the preseason would have put the team somewhere in the vicinity of the bubble. The team was coming off an 8-10 Big Ten campaign that, albeit one blessed with good fortune, portended good things to come with most of the roster returning this season. And that’s exactly what’s happened. Iowa is a top-40 team by Pomeroy standards, and sports a positive conference efficiency margin. Generally speaking, that’s a resume that should put the Hawkeyes in a good spot for earning an at-large bid on Selection Sunday. But after Iowa’s road loss to Nebraska, the
