Defending NCAA Champion Nebraska was unanimously chosen as the Big Ten Conference favorite for the 2016 volleyball season, as voted on by the conference’s 14 head coaches, it was announced on Tuesday. After claiming their fourth national title last season, the Cornhuskers top the preseason poll for the first time since 2012. NCAA semifinalist and defending Big Ten Champion Minnesota was picked to finish second, while Wisconsin was tabbed third. Student-athletes can usually look forward to a break from school and sports during the summer months. And while a handful of Huskers recently got a breather from lectures and practices, the work they performed instead was at least as challenging — and rewarding. About 20 student-athletes traveled to the small village of Las Pajas in the Dominican Republic for a few weeks out of last month to take part in the NoFilter program. The Huskers claimed the school’s first NCAA crown since 2006 with an incredible 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) victory over Texas on Saturday night in Omaha. The win marks Nebraska’s fourth NCAA volleyball title in school history. It also gives Nebraska a total of 98 NCAA Tornament wins, which ranks second in the nation behind Stanford. Nebraska's volleyball team dropped Kansas to advance to Saturday's NCAA Volleyball Tournament Championship against Texas. Fourth-seeded Nebraska used a strong finish to push their way past Kansas and punch their ticket to the championship match. Nebraska won the final seven rallies of the match to defeat the Jayhawks in front of 17,551 fans at the CenturyLink Center, the largest volleyball crowd in NCAA history. Earlier, the Big Ten's Minnesota fell to Texas in the other semifinal.
