The 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft wrapped up Wednesday, with Rounds 16-40, and a total of 30 Big Ten products were selected during the three-day event. Following the completion of the 2012 Big Ten Baseball Tournament on Saturday night, the Big Ten office released the all-tournament team. Purdue won the school’s first Big Ten tourney, thanks to an exciting 6-5 victory over heated rival Indiana, and it had five players earn honors, headlined by Most Outstanding Player Kevin Plawecki. Ohio State built a 3-0 lead before Nebraska answered with two runs in the sixth inning, but the Buckeyes held on to eliminate the Huskers with a 6-2 win in Friday’s first game of the Big Ten Baseball Tournament. Big Ten regular-season champ and No. 1 seed Purdue nipped heated rival and No. 2 Indiana, 6-5, in the 2012 Big Ten Baseball Tournament on Saturday night (recap). The tournament crown marks Purdue’s first in school history. With the win, the Boilers earn the Big Ten’s automatic berth to the NCAA tourney. Senior co-captain Tony Bucciferro allowed just two runs and struck out five in eight innings to lead the Michigan State baseball team past Nebraska, 10-9, in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Huntington Park. Michigan State (36-19) collected 17 hits and appeared to have the game in hand with a 10-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning, but Nebraska (34-22) rallied for seven runs in its final at-bat. Fresh off its first Big Ten baseball crown in more than 100 years, Purdue won three of the conference’s four individual honors and had eight players earn All-Big Ten laurels, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. Catcher Kevin Plawecki (Player of the Year) and Joe Haase (Pitcher of the Year) highlight the Boiler honorees, while Purdue coach Doug Schreiber won Coach of the Year.
