Gophers' Anderson gives eloquent statement on late assistant coach

After his team was eliminated from the Big Ten Baseball Tournament, Minnesota Gophers baseball coach John Anderson spoke with the media about the passing of Gophers pitching baseball coach Todd Oakes, who died Thursday after battle with leukemia. Anderson gave an eloquent statement about Oakes and followed it with more perspective on Thursday’s baseball game loss. Watch the video above. “He’s made our program better. There are good plays. There are great plays. And then there is the kind of play Minnesota centerfielder Dan Motl made in Wednesday’s Big Ten Baseball Tournament opener against Iowa. [ MORE: Watch Wednesday’s Big Ten Tourney highlights ] Leading 5-0 in the top of the third inning, Iowa’s Eric Schenck-Joblinske drove a ball to deep center. But Motl ran back, reached out and made an incredible diving catch. Iowa went on to upset No. 1-seeded Minnesota, 8-2, but this was undoubtedly the play of the game, and possibly the play of the year in the Big Ten. Check out

2016 football schedule analysis: Minnesota Golden Gophers

The 2015 season didn’t go as scripted for Minnesota. Jerry Kill abruptly retired and the Gophers finished with their first losing record since 2012. And he wasted little time putting his stamp on the program, letting go offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Matt Limegrover and quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski. Jay Johnson was hired from Louisiana-Lafayette to run the offense and coach quarterbacks, while Bart Miller was tabbed to coach the line.
