The 2000s saw plenty of great players in the Big Ten. One, in fact, won the Heisman: Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith (2006), who arguably is the top player from the 2000s. Over the next couple days, I’m going to take a look at the best of the best in the Big Ten since the calendar flipped to 2000. First up: Offense.
I attended a clinic for officials in the Big Ten, MAC and MVC last weekend in the Chicago area. During one part of the clinic, Big Ten director of officials Bill Carollo gave attendees an exam to complete. Here is a copy (with the answers) of the exam I received. Take a look at the questions—and feel free to test the college football rules knowledge of your friends and family.
The Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday that Dave Revsine, BTN’s lead studio host, will serve as emcee for the 2013 Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon, presented by Allstate and BMW, on Thursday, July 25 at the Hilton Chicago. Festivities begin at 11 a.m. ET, with the players and coaches autograph and photo session for fans attending the luncheon, which starts at 12:30 p.m.
Big Ten officials coordinator Bill Carollo didn’t hesitate when I asked him what the point of emphasis was going to be for officials this fall: blows targeted above the shoulders at defenseless players.
The Big Ten is as steep in tradition as any of the nation’s conferences. Considering that, it’s a dubious task to try to rank the top traditions. Athlon Sports was bold enough to give it a stab, and like many people, it thinks Ohio State’s dotting the “I” is the cream of the crop. See the publication’s list in this post.
Back in April, the Big Ten announced it was going to implement a nine-game conference schedule, starting in 2016. Thursday, it unveiled the first such schedule—along with the 2017 Big Ten league slate.

With the 2013 MLB All-Star Game less than a week away, I recently got to thinking about a Big Ten football all-star game. You know, a game that pits the Leaders Division’s best vs. the Legends Division’s best. Who would be on the teams, and who would win? See both teams, which were constructed using Phil Steele’s 2013 preseason teams, in this post.
