Volleyball Report: B1G poised to make noise in NCAA

After an unpredictable year that saw possibly the strongest collection of teams in conference history, the postseason has finally arrived. The Big Ten tied a conference record on Sunday when, for the fifth time in league history, eight teams were selected to the NCAA Volleyball Championship. Penn State took the second overall seed in the bracket, with Nebraska following a No. 8, Minnesota No. 10, Wisconsin No. 12 and Illinois earning the No. 13 seed. Those five will host first- and second-round matches at home, while Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue will play matches on the road. [ MORE: View

Volleyball Report: Penn State taking charge

Unpredictable has been the word most commonly uttered to describe this year’s Big Ten women’s volleyball season. Until the past few weeks, there was a genuine sentiment that any team had a chance to pull off a win, regardless of the matchup. However, as so often has been the case in this conference over the past decade, Penn State has asserted itself and begun to separate from the rest of the pack. At 11-1, the Nittany Lions are one match ahead of Nebraska in the Big Ten standings, yet the gap between Penn State and the rest of the conference

Volleyball Report: It's time for midseason awards!

Through 10 matches of the Big Ten season, the nation’s deepest and most decorated conference has lived up to its billing. Upsets have been plentiful, top 15 matchups are the norm and contenders have emerged from the pack. The standings have rarely looked the same on any given week, and early-season surprises have struggled to endure the grind of the league. With five weeks remaining before the postseason, here are the early contenders to take home the Big Ten hardware come December. Midseason Player of the Year: Kelsey Robinson, OH (NEB) It’s hard to argue against Robinson at this point

Volleyball Report: Five-setter here, five-setter there

“The margin for error in our conference is as thin as it has ever been.” Michigan head coach Mark Rosen made that statement heading into last Saturday night, a night that may have represented a first in Big Ten women’s volleyball. All 12 teams were in action, and at the end of the evening, all but two would play nerve-racking 5-set matches. Five-setters in a conference as strong as the Big Ten have been commonplace over the league’s history, but for one day to feature nearly every team in a race to 15 points, it could mark the beginning of

Volleyball Report: Buckle up for wild Big Ten season

Conversations with Big Ten coaches have had one common theme heading into the start of conference play: No one has any idea where his/her team, or any of their fellow members, will end up in the title race come the end of November. The Big Ten has been the strongest conference in the nation over the past few seasons, but in a year that has witnessed the league set a new NCAA record for teams in the Top 25 (9), the Big Ten’s coaches are hesitant to make any predictions. Two Final Four teams entered 2013 with the majority of

Earning the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championship last season, the Nittany Lions top the poll for the eighth time in the last nine seasons. Minnesota, which finished tied for second in the Big Ten in 2012, was voted to finish second this season. Michigan, which advanced to the NCAA semifinals last season, was selected to finish third this year, while Nebraska, which also finished the 2012 conference season tied for
