Hoosiers, Wildcats top preseason men's soccer poll

The Big Ten announced its 2012 men’s soccer Preseason Coaches’ Poll and Players to Watch List on Tuesday, with the conference’s last two regular-season champs tied at the top. Northwestern, fresh off its first Big Ten title, and 2012 champ Indiana were picked as the conference favorites. Northwestern compiled a 4-0-2 record in Big Ten play last season en route to the conference crown, while Indiana finished at 3-1-2 en route to advancing to its 25th consecutive NCAA tourney. BTN will air more soccer than ever before

CHICAGO – BTN will televise more soccer this season than ever before, with at least 60 matches set to air on BTN, including for the first time each round of the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Soccer Tournaments. Each BTN broadcast is also available on BTN2Go. The soccer season on BTN begins on Friday, Aug. 24, when defending Big Ten Champion Penn State women host 2011 National Champion Stanford, while the men begin on Sunday, Sept. 23, with seven-time national champion Indiana at Ohio State. Weekend Olympic Sports Roundup

The weekend saw several of the conference’s soccer and field hockey teams in action. Senior keeper Jeremy Clark tallied his fourth shutout of the year and red-shirt freshman Ryan Keener headed in the game’s only goal as Michigan State (6-7-4, 2-2-2) took back the Big Bear Trophy with a 1-0 victory over rival Michigan. Big Ten Fall Championships to Air on BTN in November

CHICAGO – BTN will once again provide coverage of five Big Ten fall championships, including live broadcasts during the 2011 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament, Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Soccer Tournaments and delayed coverage of the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships. BTN will televise live the semifinals and final of the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament at Penn State.  Live coverage of the semifinal round will begin at 10 AM ET with the second game to follow at approximately noon ET on Friday, Nov. 4. Wolverines Knock Off No. 4 Akron

Junior midfielder Latif Alashe chipped the University of Michigan men’s soccer team past No. 4 Akron in a 1-0 upset overtime triumph on Tuesday night at the U-M Soccer Stadium. With the Wolverines pushing forward in the offensive half of the field to start overtime, junior/sophomore midfielder Noble Sullivan poked a ball from the penalty kick spot and out of the Akron goalkeeper’s grasp back to Alashe, who chipped a shot over the keeper and multiple Zips defenders from 17 yards out for the golden goal in the 97th minute, giving the Wolverines their second win against a ranked opponent

Ohio State Tops Michigan in Overtime

Ohio State’s Chris Hegngi found the back of the net 34 seconds into overtime to lift the Buckeyes past archrival Michigan, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The defeat was the third straight overtime loss for the Wolverines. Michigan led 2-1 late in the second half, but Ohio State drew even at the 86:04 mark before striking quickly in the extra session to claim victory in the teams’ Big Ten opener.
