Wolverines Knock Off No. 4 Akron

Junior midfielder Latif Alashe chipped the University of Michigan men’s soccer team past No. 4 Akron in a 1-0 upset overtime triumph on Tuesday night at the U-M Soccer Stadium. With the Wolverines pushing forward in the offensive half of the field to start overtime, junior/sophomore midfielder Noble Sullivan poked a ball from the penalty kick spot and out of the Akron goalkeeper’s grasp back to Alashe, who chipped a shot over the keeper and multiple Zips defenders from 17 yards out for the golden goal in the 97th minute, giving the Wolverines their second win against a ranked opponent this season.

Weekend Olympic Sports Roundup

The weekend saw several of the conference’s soccer and volleyball teams in action. The 18th-ranked Indiana men’s soccer team rallied from a 1-0 deficit with four unanswered goals from Eriq Zavaleta, Alec Purdie and Nikita Kotlov in a 4-1 victory at Michigan on Saturday night. Ohio State Tops Michigan in Overtime

Ohio State’s Chris Hegngi found the back of the net 34 seconds into overtime to lift the Buckeyes past archrival Michigan, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The defeat was the third straight overtime loss for the Wolverines. Michigan led 2-1 late in the second half, but Ohio State drew even at the 86:04 mark before striking quickly in the extra session to claim victory in the teams’ Big Ten opener.
