If the Big Ten had an All-Star Weekend...

NBA All-Star Weekend is upon us, and the BTN.com team thought it would be fun to choose Big Ten participants for the annual Saturday night events and the All-Star Game. See our picks for who would compete in a mythical Big Ten Skills Challenge, Three-Point Shootout, Slam Dunk Contest and the All-Star Game in this post. Here’s how this worked: We split the league into East (Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Ohio State) and West (Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin), using the Big Ten’s new football divisional setup, with BTN.com web editor Sean Merriman taking the East

Review & preview: Big Ten stocks rise & fall

It’s Friday, which means it’s time for Three-Pointers, a chance to take the temperature of the Big Ten in several different areas. It’s a good time to be John Beilein and Michigan. Conversely, it’s not such a good time to be Tom Crean and Indiana. Weekend schedules are here with TV info, latest men’s basketball standings are over here and the season’s top plays can be seen right here. THREE STOCKS TO BUY 1. Michigan. How about those Wolverines? Just when it looked like things could go sideways with two losses in three games, Michigan waltzed into Columbus, Ohio, and

Big Ten Geeks: Hoosier collapse

On Wednesday night, Penn State stamped out any remaining Indiana tournament hopes with a shocking road upset. The Hoosiers seemingly had this game in hand the entire way, and it felt all but over when Indiana held an 11-point lead with three minutes remaining. Somehow, the Nittany Lions roared back, and they took their first lead of the entire game on a Tim Frazier layup with six seconds remaining. Yogi Ferrell missed a tough jumper at the horn, and the upset was complete. Just how crazy was that finish? Using KenPom’s win probabilities, Penn State had just a 0.2 percent chance

Four ex-Big Ten stars on same team at NBA All-Star event

For a night, Michigan products Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr. are teammates again. Same goes for Burke and his former AAU bud Jared Sullinger. It all happens at 9 p.m. ET tonight at the 2014 BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge. That’s right, Burke, Hardaway Jr. and Sullinger, along with former Indiana star Victor Oladipo, are all on the same team in the annual freshman-sophomore All-State Weekend event. Michigan hoops player does LeBron-like dunk

It was just this past week that NBA superstar LeBron James put on his semi-annual dunk contest, which was caught on film by fellow members of the Miami Heat. One of James’ signature dunks consisted of him throwing the ball off the wall, catching it and throwing down a huge reverse slam. Michigan freshman Mark Donnal must have seen James’ jaw-dropping video and decided to put on his own dunk show. Donnal took to social media and posted the following video on his Instagram account earlier today. He titled the video “LeBron Who?” Donnal was a four-star recruit out of

Read Thursday's Big Ten headlines roundup

Indiana’s strange and bizarre season took another unexpected and maddening turn last night with a home loss to last-place Penn State. How can this IU team beat top-10 squads like Wisconsin and Michigan in Bloomington, and then lose to the likes of the Nittany Lions and Northwestern at home? It’s safe to say, panic has set in for Indiana. This team just can’t shoot. And the turnover issues persist. The Hoosiers led by seven with two minutes to play. And they failed to score a basket in the final 5:16. It didn’t help that IU turned the ball over three

Five Big Ten players in ESPN NBA Mock Draft

This year’s college basketball season is entering the home stretch, which means the NBA mock drafts are going to begin to appear on a regular basis in the upcoming months. ESPN Insider Jeff Goodman released his initial 2014 NBA Mock Draft 1.0 this morning, and it’s filled with plenty of Big Ten stars. The mock draft is based on information gathered from NBA executives, college coaches and other industry sources. The draft order is based off the current NBA standings. There are a total of five Big Ten players listed in the mock draft. Indiana freshman standout Noah Vonleh highlights

Dienhart: It's Michigan's Big Ten title to lose

It’s true, so let’s go ahead and type it: Michigan’s 70-60 win Tuesday night at Ohio State put the Wolverines in the driver’s seat to win the Big Ten for a second time in three seasons. “It’s great to be in this,” John Beilein said after notching Michigan’s first win in Columbus since 2003. “I don’t know if we expected this this year. We’re watching (Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr.) in the NBA right now and they’re doing really well. I said, ‘geez, we better have made it to the Final Four last year.’ Those were really two good
