Michigan unveiled plans for new men’s hockey uniforms for the blue and maize jerseys, and they have a little something old and a little something new. Note that the white jersey will remain unchanged. It’s a move to honor some of the great Michigan teams of the past. As the release notes, “fans will recognize Michigan’s redesigned maize jersey as the same uniform that the Wolverines wore in the “Big Chill at the Big House” outdoor game vs. Michigan State.” See the video from that game in this post to refresh your memory. Men’s hockey will become an official Big Ten sport in the 2013-14 academic year, so with that in mind, the Big Ten Conference office announced Thursday that its tournaments will be held at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn., in 2014 and 2016, and at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich., in 2015 and 2017.
Talk about a whirlwind day. Waiting to attend his Astronomy 101 class Wednesday, former Michigan goalie Shawn Hunwick received a phone call he’ll never forget. It was from Michigan assistant Brian Wiseman, who told him to get down to Yost Arena right away. The reason: The Columbus Blue Jackets needed a backup goalie for Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings, of all teams.
Michigan and Michigan State were eliminated from the NCAA tournament Friday night. The Wolverines lost in overtime to Cornell, while the Spartans fell to Union. Read recaps in this post and view the interactive NCAA bracket.
Minnesota, Michigan and Michigan State are three of the 16 men’s hockey teams in the NCAA Tournament that leads to the Frozen Four. Michigan (9), Minnesota (5), and Michigan State (3) have combined for 17 NCAA championships. Thanks to great special teams effort, including two power play goals, the 5th-ranked Wolverines notched a big victory against 20th-ranked Northern Michigan, 4-1.
