Dave Brandon announced Wednesday that Maryland’s Erik Bakich has been hired as Michigan’s new baseball coach. Bakich, the 19th head coach in program history, spent the past three seasons at Maryland, where he compiled a 70-90 record.
The 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft wrapped up Wednesday, with Rounds 16-40, and a total of 30 Big Ten products were selected during the three-day event. Fresh off its first Big Ten baseball crown in more than 100 years, Purdue won three of the conference’s four individual honors and had eight players earn All-Big Ten laurels, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. Catcher Kevin Plawecki (Player of the Year) and Joe Haase (Pitcher of the Year) highlight the Boiler honorees, while Purdue coach Doug Schreiber won Coach of the Year. It was a memorable Senior Day for the Michigan State baseball team on Saturday afternoon at McLane Baseball Stadium. The Spartans capped off the regular season with a 9-2 victory over Penn State, giving the class of 2012 its 128th win over the past four years, tying for the most in school history along with the class of 1989 and 1990.
