Two Big Ten teams will compete in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship, it was announced on Sunday night. Michigan State and Penn State earned berths to the 16-team tournament, with the Spartans opening play on Wednesday and the Nittany Lions participating on Saturday.
Third-seeded Michigan State topped fifth-seeded Iowa, 3-2, to claim the 2013 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans rallied from a 2-0 deficit, and Adelle Lever scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal on a highlight play in the 62nd minute. Abby Barker accounted for Michigan State’s first two goals.
Michigan State trailed Iowa, 2-0, in the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament finals, but the Spartans scored three unanswered goals to rally and claim the championship. No. 5 seed Iowa topped No. 1 seed Penn State 4-3 in overtime while it took two overtimes for No. 3 seed Michigan State to edge No. 7 seed Ohio State 2- 1.
