NCAA nixed Iowa's 'Street' jersey request

The “CMS40″ patch and warm up shirts Iowa wore Saturday were a nice touch to honor former Hawkeye Chris Street on the 20th anniversary of his death. The Hawkeyes wanted to do even more to remember Street, however the NCAA nixed the team’s first idea. According to HawkCentral.com, the NCAA wouldn’t grant Iowa permission to wear special jerseys with “STREET” on the nameplate.

On Saturday, Iowa defended its home court with a win over Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes raced out to a 30-10 lead before the Badgers finally got something going on offense, though I think that early start for Wisconsin overshadows what kind of game this really was.

Iowa Honors Chris Street

Twenty years to the day of his death, Iowa honored former basketball player Chris Street at halftime of Saturday’s game against Wisconsin. Street died in a car accident on Jan. 19, 1993, during his junior season in Iowa City. On Saturday, the Hawkeyes welcomed back Street’s family, honored every Iowa Chris Street Award winner, first handed out in 1993, and aired a video montage of Street as a player and person. Watch the tribute now.
