Iowa eyes breakout season

Iowa is an exciting team that looks primed for a breakout as Fran McCaffery enters his fourth season in Iowa City. “Obviously, we’re very optimistic about this year’s team,” said McCaffery. “Recognize the position we’re in and welcome the challenge. I’ve not had a team in my entire career that is this deep. “I think we have to make sure that we’re able to rotate personnel in a way that maximizes our effectiveness. But I think we have a great level of maturity on this team and we’re really looking forward to it.” Talent abounds for a program that lost

Harris, MSU top Big Ten preseason lists

Michigan State has been chosen as the unanimous Big Ten favorite heading into the 2013-14 men’s basketball season as voted on by a panel of conference media. The media also tabbed Spartan sophomore Gary Harris as the Preseason Player of the Year. Michigan and Ohio State were selected to finish second and third, respectively. Harris led a six-member preseason All-Big Ten team, as the media vote resulted in additional honorees due to a tie. He was joined on the team by the Wolverines’ Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III, Michigan State’s Adreian Payne, the Buckeyes’ Aaron Craft and Penn State’s

Clothes Call: Check out these Big Ten hoops changes

A new basketball season is upon us. Before the ball tips early next month, let’s take a look at some of the new uniform and court designs we’ll see around the Big Ten this season. A little warning, there aren’t nearly as many changes this year as there were last, and that goes for both the uniforms and the courts. Some good news: After talking to team representatives, it seems like we won’t see the adidas “Bleed Out” or Nike “Hyper Elite Road” uniforms that debuted last season. That doesn’t mean the companies won’t come out with some other new

Big Ten Geeks: Iowa 2013-14 Preview

Last year Iowa returned to respectability, amassing 25 wins for the first time since Steve Alford was the coach. This year, I look at whether Iowa can realistically get its first Big Ten title since Magic Johnson was in college. 2013 Record: 25-13 (9-9) Conference Offensive Efficiency: 1.01 (6th) Conference Defensive Efficiency: 0.97 (4th) Percentage of Conference Minutes Returning: 89 Percentage of Conference Minutes Played by Returning Freshmen: 28 Considering how successful he’s been in rebuilding the Hawkeyes, the silence surrounding Fran McCaffrey’s impact on the program is deafening. Sure, the insiders and folks around Iowa City certainly believe in

Top moments from Iowa's Midnight Madness

Iowa basketball fans were treated to a fun night of festivities as Fran McCaffery’s team was introduced to the public at the Hawkeyes’ Black and Gold Blowout event on Friday evening. The night’s events included a team introduction, a dunk contest and a full scrimmage. There were several standout performances throughout the night, but it was Iowa junior Gabe Olaseni who stole the show. Olaseni threw down a Michael Jordan-like dunk after taking off from the free throw line and throwing it down with one hand: WOW! RT @BTN_Iowa MUST SEE: @Iowahoops Gabe Olaseni does his best MJ impression and

Five B1G teams land in Coaches Top 25

The release of the USA Today coaches poll is another indicator of how close we are to beginning basketball season. I was not shocked to see five Big Ten teams ranked in the new poll: 2. Michigan State, 9. Michigan, 10. Ohio State, 21. Wisconsin and 24. Indiana. I thought Michigan State could have merited being the No. 1 team in the nation. Alas, Kentucky got that honor. But the Spartans are loaded with the likes of Gary Harris and Adreian Payne. They didn’t bypass the NBA draft to finish second. And don’t forget about Branden Dawson. Here are a
