Big Ten Geeks: Iowa crashes the party

In case any doubters remained—Iowa is for real, as proven by its 10-point win in Columbus. Granted, this was probably more like a six- or eight-point win if Ohio State isn’t fouling desperately at the end. But that’s splitting hairs, especially because most teams in that position do the same thing. Frankly, if you’re looking for reasons to call this result a fluke, you might be looking for a while. Iowa wasn’t red-hot from the outside (29 percent on 3s), Ohio State wasn’t atrocious at the free-throw line (71 percent), and both teams shot roughly the same number of free

Video: McCaffery chest-bumps players after win

Let’s just say Fran McCaffery was really excited about Sunday’s upset at No. 3 Ohio State. And who can blame him? This was McCaffery’s first game back from the one-game suspension he received for his actions in last week’s loss at Wisconsin. It also marked Iowa’s first win over a top 5 team since 2001. So, how excited was he? Well, the Iowa coach had chest-bumps for his players after the final buzzer. Watch it in this post. Week in review: Badgers continue to impress

It’s Friday and that means it’s time for my weekly 3-pointers, which is my own look back and forward in the world of Big Ten hoops. What do we mean “wild?” Did you not see this shot, this ejection, and this OT thriller? Here’s what we cover on this Friday: Three teams on the rise, three teams sinking, and three things I learned this week. We also cover my three most impressive wins from the past seven days and the three biggest games coming up in the next week. Let’s do this. Three Stocks to Buy Minnesota. How ‘bout those

Big Ten Geeks: Better to be lucky than good?

Wednesday and Thursday brought some interesting results on the Big Ten hardwood. Let’s jump right in. After Michigan’s last road game, we opined that the Wolverines were fortunate to leave Minneapolis with a victory. As if to troll us, John Beilein’s team found an even luckier way to win a Big Ten road game, this time in Nebraska’s brand new Pinnacle Bank Arena. This one point victory included a half-court make at the halftime buzzer by Derrick Walton, then a point-blank miss at the end of regulation by Nebraska’s Leslee Smith. If either of those shots goes the way you’d
