We knew it was only a matter of time before a player was ejected as a result of college football’s new rule on targeting a defenseless player, and it happened on the season’s first night. Indiana State’s Carlos Aviles was booted for his hit on Shane Wynn during a punt return in the third quarter. Aviles wasn’t the first player ejected under the new rule, actually, as Tulane and Missouri State had players tossed earlier in the night.

Indiana’s Nate Sudfeld threw four touchdown passes, and Tevin Coleman rushed for 169 yards and two more TDs in Thursday night’s record-breaking 73-35 victory over Indiana State. The Hoosiers (1-0) scored 45 points in the first half, their highest total since the school started keeping records in 1949, and broke the Memorial Stadium scoring record by topping the 69 points Nebraska scored in 1978.

Indiana is rolling, to put it mildly. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 45-7 first-half lead, fueled by six touchdown drives that were all 75 seconds or less.
