Did you see this? Mike Hopkins interview from space

Hundreds of former athletes have appeared on the Big Ten Network since it was launched back in August, 2007. But former Illinois defensive back Mike Hopkins was the first interviewee to answer questions from Space. That’s right, space… Ever see a former #B1G football team captain interviewed FROM SPACE? @AstroIllini @NASA #orvillemoment WATCH – http://t.co/god31dxGba — Big Ten Network (@BigTenNetwork) October 18, 2013 Hopkins, a four-year letter winner who played at Illinois from 1988-91, is now a current NASA astronaut. Four Downs: Predictions, facts & more

It’s that time of the week, time for four predictions, four thoughts, four truths, four jockstrap games and four factoids. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for Four Downs. Are you ready for it? Here we go! 4 PREDICTIONS 1. After a lackluster effort at Wisconsin last Saturday, Northwestern is going to come out motivated vs. Minnesota. Don’t read too much into the consecutive losses for the Wildcats. They got beat by arguably the two best teams in Ohio State and Wisconsin. No shame in that. It’s time for NU to get back on track—with or without dinged up

Friday links: Meyer hands out OSU report card

Happy Football Friday! Let’s not waste any time, OK? Let’s dig right into some of the Big Ten news that’s making ripples from Lincoln to State College—and all points in between. This caught my attention: Urban Meyer offers a midterm report card for his 6-0 team. There obviously are many areas that get good marks. The areas of concern? “The alarming areas are pass defense, our return game has not been what we thought it would be and we still have to improve the intermediate and short passing game,” Meyer said.” Speaking of Ohio State, Braxton Miller says he wasn’t

Five B1G teams land in Coaches Top 25

The release of the USA Today coaches poll is another indicator of how close we are to beginning basketball season. I was not shocked to see five Big Ten teams ranked in the new poll: 2. Michigan State, 9. Michigan, 10. Ohio State, 21. Wisconsin and 24. Indiana. I thought Michigan State could have merited being the No. 1 team in the nation. Alas, Kentucky got that honor. But the Spartans are loaded with the likes of Gary Harris and Adreian Payne. They didn’t bypass the NBA draft to finish second. And don’t forget about Branden Dawson. Here are a

Best of Week 8: Will we see an upset Saturday?

After first looking at the menu for Week 8, you may be inclined to rake leaves this Saturday. But, don’t. I have a funny feeling we could have an upset. Besides, there aren’t enough leaves on the ground to rake just yet. [ MORE: Get Tom Dienhart’s Week 8 Big Ten previews ] BEST GAME: Iowa at Ohio State. This clash is the closest thing to a “best game.” The Hawkeyes travel to Ohio State. Good thing Iowa will be coming off a bye, as it likely will need the extra prep time. It’s worth noting that Iowa has lost

Week 8 previews: It's time to get ready for Saturday

There are five games on the Big Ten docket this week. But none of the clashes figures to have a big impact on the league race—unless we have some major upsets. Still, there will be a lot to keep an eye as we begin to wade into the second half of the season. Here’s a look at each game.
