Rayvonte Rice: 'I am fortunate to be here'

No Big Ten newcomer has had a bigger impact than Illinois guard Rayvonte Rice, the Big Ten’s leading scorer. And that’s a big reason why the Fighting Illini have been one of the Big Ten’s biggest surprises. At 6-4, 235 pounds, Rice is built like a linebacker. And he often plays like one, showing abandon as he crashes the lane on a drive or to get a rebound. It comes naturally for a guy whose cousin is former Illinois running back Mikel Leshoure, the school’s single game and single-season rushing leader. [ MORE: View 2013-14 Big Ten scoring leaders ]

In the first epic clash of the conference season, Michigan State held serve at home against a relentless Ohio State team. Does this give the Spartans the inside track on the Big Ten title? Let’s dive in. In a lot of ways, this was a tough game to figure. MSU fans can point to the fact that their team led nearly the entire game, and that Michigan State’s ability to build a 17-point lead over the first 31:58 of game time is indicative of who is the better team. Big Ten Geeks: Did Fran lose it?

The easy narrative for Wisconsin’s win over Iowa is that Fran McCaffrey was hit with a double technical foul when his team held a 2-point lead, and that those four points gave Wisconsin the lead, the momentum, and the margin of victory. VIDEO: #Hawkeyes Fran McCaffery addresses ejection in postgame presser – http://t.co/AlHFDt79LY — Big Ten Network (@BigTenNetwork) January 6, 2014 But is that true? Iowa held an 11-point lead at halftime, and up until the technical (which were assessed before Nigel Hayes could attempt his free throws on a foul called just prior), Wisconsin was closing fast. Video: Tempers flare in Champaign, Newbill gets ejected

Tempers flared in the second half of the Penn State-Illinois game, and the scuffle led to an extended delay and the ejection of Penn State guard D.J. Newbill. The mix-up occurred when Kendrick Nunn collided with Newbill on his way up the court after driving for an Illini bucket. Newbill didn’t take kindly to the collision and swung his left hand into the back of Nunn’s head. The two players had to be separated. Watch the scuffle in this post.
