Clothes Call: Check out these Big Ten hoops changes

A new basketball season is upon us. Before the ball tips early next month, let’s take a look at some of the new uniform and court designs we’ll see around the Big Ten this season. A little warning, there aren’t nearly as many changes this year as there were last, and that goes for both the uniforms and the courts. Some good news: After talking to team representatives, it seems like we won’t see the adidas “Bleed Out” or Nike “Hyper Elite Road” uniforms that debuted last season. That doesn’t mean the companies won’t come out with some other new

Big Ten Geeks: Illinois 2013-14 Preview

The yo-yo continues. Since the Dee Brown Era, Illinois has reliably alternated good season with mediocre, missing the NCAA Tournament every other year. This past season did its part in an up year, as the Illini were only 5 points from reaching their first Sweet 16 since 2005. That certainly qualifies as a successful season for first year coach John Groce, who injected plenty of energy into the program. But also, Groce injected a ton of three-pointers. The feel-good story would be that John Groce (who comes from the coaching tree of Thad Matta, whose teams almost always shoot well)

Illinois newcomers shine in exhibition season opener

Jon Groce’s Illinois basketball team kicked off the Big Ten college basketball exhibition season with a commanding 101-64 win over McKendree Thursday night at the State Farm Center. More important than the final score, this was a chance for fans to see how this Illinois team would fill the void left by the departure of senior guards Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson. Five B1G teams land in Coaches Top 25

The release of the USA Today coaches poll is another indicator of how close we are to beginning basketball season. I was not shocked to see five Big Ten teams ranked in the new poll: 2. Michigan State, 9. Michigan, 10. Ohio State, 21. Wisconsin and 24. Indiana. I thought Michigan State could have merited being the No. 1 team in the nation. Alas, Kentucky got that honor. But the Spartans are loaded with the likes of Gary Harris and Adreian Payne. They didn’t bypass the NBA draft to finish second. And don’t forget about Branden Dawson. Here are a
