Big Ten announces ex-players to attend media days

The Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday the 14 former players that will be in attendance at the 2014 Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon, presented by Allstate and BMW. Former Illini Shawn Afryl, 22, died in workout

(AP) Campus officials say a football player at Winona State University who recently transferred from Illinois has died while working out with teammates. Winona State said in a news release that 22-year-old Shawn Afryl died Monday during a workout at Maxwell Field on campus. Information about his cause of death was not immediately available. School officials said the 6-foot-3, 310-pound offensive lineman had recently enrolled after his transfer. Former Illinois OL Shawn Afryl, 22, dies Monday

Former University of Illinois offensive lineman Shawn Afryl, 22, passed away Monday. The Skokie, Illinois, native and Niles West High School graduate played in one game for the Fighting Illini during his three years on the team. “All of us in the Fighting Illini football family are greatly saddened by Shawn’s passing last night,” Illinois head coach Tim Beckman said. “He was a great teammate and a dedicated student.
