In a back and forth battle, the No. 9 Nebraska wrestling team took down Arizona State, 18-12, on Saturday night at the NU Coliseum. Wrestling in front of 778 fans, the Huskers improved to 5-1, while the Sun Devils fell to 5-2.
Only a sophomore, Sam Thompson has plenty of individual highlights ahead of him. Thing is, the high-flying Buckeye may have a difficult time topping the highlight reel he directed in Saturday’s rout of Long Beach State. Thompson made a living high above the rim, throwing down a pair of impressive alley-oops and slamming home an inbound pass. Jordan Hooper had a career-best 36 points and 12 rebounds to help No. 25 Nebraska slip by No. 24 Florida State 78-77 on Saturday, handing the Seminoles their first loss.
Gary Harris scored 20 points and No. 19 Michigan State broke away in the second half to beat Loyola of Chicago 73-61 Saturday. Adreian Payne added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Michigan State (8-2).
Derek Thompson scored eight points and Eastern Michigan held off Purdue 47-44 on Saturday afternoon. The Boilermakers (4-5) rebounded a missed free throw and had a chance for a tying basket with 8.7 seconds to play, but Dru Anthrop threw the ball away near midcourt. It was the last of Purdue’s 18 turnovers.
Wisconsin fans are excited to have former coach and current AD Barry Alvarez on board to guide the Badgers in the 2013 Rose Bowl vs. Stanford. And who can blame them? Not only is Alvarez a school legend who made Wisconsin football relevant, he’s a perfect 3-0 in the Rose Bowl.
