The NCAA has hit Ohio State with a one-year bowl ban and other penalties for a scandal that involved players taking cash and tattoos in exchange for jerseys, rings and other Buckeyes memorabilia, according to The Associated Press. The university had previously offered to vacate the 2010 season, return bowl money, go on two years of NCAA probation and use five fewer football scholarships over the next three years, but the NCAA on Tuesday banned the Buckeyes from playing in a bowl in Urban Meyer’s first year as head coach in 2012, further reduced the number of scholarships and tacked on a year of probation
Just as we did during 2010-2011 hoops season, we’re archiving Gus Johnson’s greatest calls this season. Johnson called the Big Ten Football Championship for Fox and is calling men’s basketball for BTN all winter long. We clip and post his best calls and archive them here during games, so bookmark the page and come back all season right up through the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament. Right now you can watch Johnson call Jordan Hulls’ lefty 3 to beat the shot clock last night at Indiana. Check out the rest of his Howard-Indiana calls in this post.
It’s time to release my latest Big Ten men’s hoops power rankings. The rankings are not meant to mimic the Big Ten standings. What fun would that be? They aren’t scientific, either. They’re simply my thoughts on where each Big Ten team stands right now and who would win on a neutral court. Agree? Disagree? Tweet @BTNBrentYarina or leave your comments below. See Brent’s rankings in this post. Also, watch our interview with Aaron Craft, whose Buckeyes host Lamar at 8:30 ET Tuesday on BTN.
Like big dunks? You’re in luck, because Michigan State’s Branden Dawson got up and threw one down with authority during Monday night’s game against UMKC at the Breslin Center. The freshman, you could say, wasn’t all that intimated by Kangaroos big man Brad Reid, all 6-foot-11 of him. No, instead Dawson posterized the poor guy. Watch the athletic freshman’s powerful dunk now.
The Big Ten went 4-0 on Monday, with Indiana blasting Howard (recap), Iowa throttling Central Arkansas (recap), Michigan State destroying UMKC (recap) and Illinois nipping Cornell (recap). All together, the Big Ten won the four games by an average of 34.3 points, and that includes Illinois’ four-point win. Catch up on the action on our Big Ten scoreboard and get recaps and video highlights in this post. Also, watch Victor Oladipo’s latest highlight-reel dunk now.
