They say time flies when you’re having fun, and this Big Ten Women’s Basketball season is no exception. With only one week left until the Big Ten tournament, here are my picks for Big Ten Conference awards: Coach of the Year: Ohio State’s – Kevin McGuff Coach McGuff has managed to stay afloat of the Big Ten with only one conference loss to Northwestern. Currently riding a Big Ten best 11-game win streak, the Buckeyes look to be clicking on all cylinders and poised to make a run at the Big Ten tourney crown. Player of the Year: Rachel Banham
As part of BTN’s celebration of Black History Month, Howard Griffith sits down for an interview with Ohio State AD Gene Smith, who shares what Black History Month means to him. Watch more BTN TV features here.
Kobe 11 PEs for Kentucky, Michigan State, Duke, and Oregon: pic.twitter.com/hoJfhMeeW0 — Heidi Burgett (@heidiburgett) February 24, 2016 It looks like the Michigan State Spartans will have some new, fresh Nikes to wear this season. Nike’s PR Director, Heidi Burgett, tweeted out a photo of specially designed Kobe 11 PEs for Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke and Oregon. Check out the photo at the top of the post. These are awesome and will likely be a big hit among the players. Unfortunately for fans, Burgett responded to a follower that the shoes will be “player exclusive,” meaning they will not go
Jim Harbaugh’s debut could not have gone much better. He inherited a 5-7 team and turned it into a 10-3 squad that punctuated the season with a domination of Florida in the Citrus Bowl. The losses all were “quality,” as the Wolverines fell at Utah in the opener–barely, vs. Michigan State (in one of the craziest endings ever) and vs. an Ohio State club that no doubt is the better program … for now. With the Golden State Warriors in the midst of a potential record-breaking season as they take aim on the Chicago Bulls’ 72-10 mark of 1995-96, I thought it would be fun to look back on what I think have been the most dominating Big Ten teams since 1990-91 … the last 25 years.
Ezekiel Elliott will turn plenty of heads at the 2016 NFL Combine. [ MORE: Get all of our Big Ten pros coverage ] Between the former Ohio State running back’s do-it-all skills, his much-talked-about midriff, and his head-turning St. Louis/Ohio State-inspired Nike custom cleats, he’s going to be tough to miss in Indianapolis. Elliott, a St. Louis native, tweeted the pictures above late Wednesday morning. Safe to say, Ohio State fans are going to love the Buckeyes-inspired design. Elliott will work out Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium. View the full Combine schedule.
Cruising through my Big Ten Mailbag on a quiet February afternoon. What do I find? Questions about Purdue’s prospects, Iowa’s offensive line, an Indiana football recruit and Denzel Valentine’s award hopes, among other things. Enjoy! Former Illinois defensive lineman Jihad Ward is looking to make a name for himself before the 2016 NFL Draft. Consider it done. Ward, who tips the scales at 296 pounds, posted a video to Instagram of himself throwing down a reverse dunk. Ward stands 6-foot-5, but it’s impressive to see a guy as big as he is do something like this. In two seasons in Champaign, Ward collected 12 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
Just two weeks remain in the Big Ten regular season, and I think everyone can all agree that the Big Ten Player of the Year will come down to Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine and Iowa’s Jarrod Uthoff. [ MORE: Power Rankings | Player Rankings | Game Rankings | Bracketology | Ready for the week ahead? | Best of week that was | Early look at B1G tourney bracket | Standings | Stats | Scoreboard | Polls ] As they did last week, the two stars top my latest Big Ten Player Rankings. Good to see Michigan State promoting Denzel Valentine for postseason honors by sending out a trinket. And, it’s a perfect embodiment of the versatile Valentine: a multi-purpose tool that includes a small knife, flashlight and bottle opener. It is green and includes Valentine’s name, number, and the Spartans’ logo. The guy was a stud last night in the win at OSU and has to be the fav to be national player of the year. *** Break up the Golden Gophers! That’s two wins in a row after downing Rutgers last night. *** As for the Scarlet Knights … well, they
