Tim Frazier stands all of 6-foot-1. So when the Penn State point guard elevates to swat an opposing big man, it’s kind of a big deal. The Nittany Lions’ do-it-all star emphatically blocked Cornell’s 6-foot-9 Deion Giddens’ layup in Wednesday night’s 74-67 home victory. The block was quite the highlight, no matter how many inches (8) Frazier was giving up. It was so good, in fact, BTN play-by-play man Eric Collins had this to say: “Blocked away by Frazier! (AP) Penn State overcame a cold night of shooting with some clutch 3-pointers Wednesday as the Nittany Lions held off Cornell 74-67. Tim Frazier had 17 points for Penn State (8-5), Cammeron Woodyard and Trey Lewis added 13 each and Jermaine Marshall had 12. The Nittany Lions, who shot 38 percent from the field, connected on 7 of 14 3-pointers in the second half. Read the full AP recap and see the box score. The start of the Big Ten men’s hoops season is just around the corner. Next Tuesday, in fact, Minnesota-Illinois (BTN) and Wisconsin-Nebraska tip off the conference slate. With the holiday break here, BTN.com web editor Brent Yarina decided to release his latest Big Ten Player Rankings.
It had been speculated, and now it’s true: Everett Withers has been hired as co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Ohio State. Withers was the interim head coach at North Carolina this season after Butch Davis was fired in July. Withers, who also was UNC’s defensive coordinator, guided the Tar Heels to a 7-5 mark and spot in the Independence Bowl vs. Missouri on December 26.
Illinois once again put on a dismal offensive display against Cornell. Things started out well, with Bruce Weber’s team taking a 10-3 lead out of the gate, but the offense completely fell apart from there. But we’ve seen numbers like this from Illinois before:
