Nebraska Runs Past UTC, 40-7

(AP) Taylor Martinez ran for 135 yards and three touchdowns out of Nebraska’s new no-huddle offense and the No. 10 Cornhuskers beat Chattanooga 40-7 Saturday in their first game as Big Ten members. Rex Burkhead added 75 yards and a touchdown as the Cornhuskers won their 26th consecutive opener, the longest streak in the nation. Martinez scored on runs of 7, 43 and 47 yards and completed 11 of 22 passes for 116 yards. The Mocs of the FCS scored their only points when Marlon Anthony caught a 13-yard pass from B.J. Lightning, WMU Can't Stop Michigan

(AP) Michigan has beaten Western Michigan 34-10 in a game stopped late in the third quarter because of lightning. Both schools agreed to cancel the game with 1:27 left in the third during a second weather delay. The Wolverines won Brady Hoke’s debut with linebacker Brandon Herron returning an interception 94 yards for a touchdown and scoring again on a fumble return. Fitzgerald Toussaint had 11 carries for 80 yards and ran for two TDs. Denard Robinson was 9 of 13 for 98 yards and ran eight times for 46 yards, making him the team’s third-leading rusher in the game. USC Holds Off Minnesota, 19-17

(AP) Robert Woods caught a school-record 17 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 25 Southern California hung on to spoil Jerry Kill’s coaching debut for Minnesota in a 19-17 victory Saturday. Matt Barkley completed a school-record 34 passes for 304 yards for the Trojans, who still couldn’t score in the second half of their 14th consecutive season-opening victory. Freshman quarterback Max Shortell came off the Gophers’ bench in the fourth quarter and threw a 12-yard TD pass to Brandon Green with 8:03 to play, but Torin Harris intercepted his pass near midfield with 53 seconds to play. Illinois Starts Slow, Tops Arkansas St.

(AP) Illinois started slow but used 100-yard receiving days from A.J. Jenkins and Darius Millines to open the season with a 33-15 win over Arkansas State on Saturday. Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase threw for a career-best 267 yards. His 16 completions went to Jenkins, who had 11 catches for 148 yards and a touchdown, and Millines, who caught five balls for 199 yards and a score. Jason Ford rushed for 86 yards and two TDs. The Red Wolves led 8-7 with less than three minutes left in the first half on a safety and a pair of field goals. But Illinois answered with Millines’ touchdown and a field goal before halftime. Iowa Puts Away Tenn. Tech, 34-7

(AP) James Vandenberg threw for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Marvin McNutt and Iowa opened its season by pounding Tennessee Tech 34-7 Saturday in the schools’ season opener. McNutt had 140 yards receiving for the Hawkeyes, who won their 11th straight home opener despite an 84-minute delay because of lightning. Iowa overwhelmed the Golden Eagles of the FCS with 24 points in the second quarter. McNutt took a Vandenberg pass 88 yards for a touchdown, and Shaun Prater returned an interception 89 yards for a TD late in the first half to put the Hawkeyes ahead 27-0.
