Jack Conklin didn’t expect to be here. With no Division I scholarship out of Plainwell High School in Plainwell, Michigan, Conklin has defied odds en route to becoming one of the Big Ten’s premier offensive lineman and a likely first round NFL draft pick. Here he is, though, just days away from being a high pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, which starts with the first round Thursday night in Chicago. Before Conklin hears his name called in Chicago, BTN host Mike Hall profiles the former Michigan State walk-on-turned-star’s story, one that would make a great movie script. Watch the
Prolific. There is no other way to describe Ohio State’s performance in the last 10 NFL drafts. It’s a proverbial football factory in Columbus.
Iowa, fresh off one of the school’s greatest seasons in which it raced to a school-record 12-0 start, capped a successful spring practice Saturday afternoon. Don’t’ look now, but Kirk Ferentz 18th edition of the Hawkeyes could have a shot to repeat as West champs. [ MORE: Watch replay of the Iowa spring game on BTN2Go ] Iowa welcomes back a strong corps of players on both sides of the ball, led by QB C.J. Beathard on offense and CB Desmond King on defense. But there are some concerns as the Hawkeyes. The defense could be a cut-above if the front
How about this: an anonymous scout has blasted Christian Hackenberg. Pennlive.com notes that while the scouts managed to highlight Hackenberg’s upside, they also blasted him for a lack of production and his role in taking 104 career sacks. But those criticisms were tame compared to this scorcher on Hackenberg’s leadership: “He was a Bill O’Brien guy and he had some issues with Franklin,” the scout said. “He hangs out more with managers than he does teammates. It tells me he likes to be king of the little people rather than king of the big people.” Wow. Seems kind of unfair.
Thanks to Jason Mars, “Siri” could get a whole lot more effective in the years to come. An assistant professor of computer science at the University of Michigan, Mars and his team of researchers built their own intelligent assistant, named Sirius, which features voice-command and image-matching capabilities. They released Sirius in March 2015 to the rest of the world so other researchers could examine how to improve intelligent assistants too. “We designed an open platform for intelligent assistants like Siri, Cortana, Google Now,” Mars said. “And it made a really nice splash. These kinds of infrastructures were locked up at
Illinois claimed its seventh Big Ten title in the last eight years after shooting an event record 838 in the 2016 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships at Victoria National. The crown marks the Fighting Illini’s 14th in program history, and it gives them the automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. Illinois’ team score bests the previous standard of 842 set by Ohio State in 2004. The Fighting Illini were followed by second-place Iowa (851), third-place Maryland (866), and Michigan and Michigan State, which tied for fourth place with a team score of 867. BTN will debut coverage of the Big
Whenever Julian Pinnix-Odrick sees Chris Ash in the hallways of Rutgers' football center, the fifth-year senior tells his first-year coach that it's OK to smile. Ash has cracked a few smiles in wrapping up his first spring practice on Saturday night in front of 14,177 fans.
(AP) Tyler O’Connor has been keeping a list of goals in a spot near and dear to any 22-year-old’s heart. [ MORE: Watch replay of Michigan State spring game on BTN2Go ] “The background of my phone has been the goals that I’ve had for this spring,” the Michigan State quarterback said. “I do feel like I’ve accomplished those things, so I feel very good.” O’Connor wrapped up spring practice Saturday, throwing for 138 yards and a touchdown in the Spartans’ spring game. His Green team lost 14-11 to the White team, but O’Connor put up the best passing numbers
(AP) Iowa had hoped that the return of star defensive end Drew Ott would fill out its defense. [ MORE: Watch replay of the Iowa spring game on BTN2Go ] The Hawkeyes should be stout on that side of the ball anyway. Iowa suffered its first major loss in 2016 when the NCAA denied Ott’s appeal for an extra year of eligibility because of a medical hardship. But the Hawkeyes should still have one of the best defenses in the Big Ten next fall, with seven starters back from a unit that allowed just 19 points a game last season.
During football and basketball games, BTN LiveBIG will spotlight notable examples of research, innovation and community service from around the conference. In-Game stories will provide more background on these features, and the opportunity to view the videos again. In my 10 years of working on video content, I’ve had a handful of shoots in elementary schools. As a producer, you get excited knowing you’re going to capture footage of cute kids having fun and smiling. Add some slow motion to that and you’ve got gold! When I walked into Earle STEM Academy in the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side,
