Q&A: Shawne Merriman talks Terps, move to B1G

BTN had a distinguished visitor Wednesday, as former Maryland and NFL star Shawne Merriman visited our headquarters. Merriman starred for the Terps from 2002-2004, earning All-ACC honors in his final season, and went on to lead the NFL in sacks (2006) and be a three-time All-Pro. See our Q&A with Merriman in this post. BTN.com: For our fans who may not know, how did you get the nickname “Lights Out?” Shawne Merriamn: My sophomore year in high school, I knocked out four guys in one game. I had parents come in and protest that I should not be on the

Photos: Maryland puts up 'Think B1G' billboards

Less than a month away from becoming an official Big Ten member, Maryland is getting its community ready for the much-anticipated move. The school has put up “Think B1G” billboards throughout the Baltimore area, both on interstates and at Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Maryland, along with Rutgers, joins the Big Ten on July 1. [ MORE: Video: Purdue removes upper bleachers at Ross-Ade Stadium ]

Badgers show off uniform combos at photo shoot

Here’s something you probably didn’t know (or care to add up): Wisconsin will have 20 possible uniform combinations this year. The Badgers showed off the designs Wednesday during their annual photo shoot. To be fair, many of the combinations aren’t that different, with the team boasting a primary white helmet and alternate red lid that can be mixed and matched with three facemasks (white, red and black). The Badgers did unveil a new combination Wednesday, and they seemed to hint that it could be in play this fall. [ MORE: Video: Northwestern hints at a new uniform combination, too ]

Video: Luke Fickell owns dodgeball at Ohio State event

The Ohio State football program held its Champions Dinner a couple weeks ago, and there’s a pretty fun YouTube video of the festivities. The dinner is something Meyer does every spring to reward his players for excellence on and off the field. They bond, they barbeque, and they play cornhole, dodgeball and softball. Basically, it’s a day full of fun. [ MORE: Urban Meyer tweets photo of Ohio Stadium expansion ] Unless you’re playing dodgeball against Luke Fickell’s team. Do yourself a favor and watch Fickell at the 52-second mark. The man was there to win! h/t: elevenwarriors.com Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer tweets photo of Ohio Stadium expansion

Like several other stadiums across the nation, Ohio Stadium has undergone several renovations since the the 2013 season. Last month, the team added new field turf and unveiled renderings of a new locker room. The one fans will notice the most is nearing completion, and that’s the addition of approximately 2,600 seats to the south end zone. [ MORE: Maryland adds B1G logo to field | Rutgers, too ] The new seats almost close off the stadium’s iconic Horseshoe, but they also push capacity close to 105,000, which moves it ahead of Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium for third largest in the

Photo: PSU fan gets Beaver Stadium groom's cake

Penn State fans will love the groom’s cake a Nittany Lion fan had at his wedding last Saturday. It was a replica of Beaver Stadium, and the scoreboard (speaking of which, look at the team’s new video board) displayed the date: 5-31-14. Check out the cake in this post. Looks like Beaver Stadium, doesn’t it? Yes, it is missing the S Zone, but whatever. Every seat is full, too, much to new coach James Franklin’s approval. Probably nitpicking here, but I would have asked for a White Out. There aren’t many more picturesque sights than a White Out at Beaver

Purdue to put student photos on helmet vs. Iowa

Hey, Purdue fans, want to see your face on the Purdue helmet this year? You can make it happen. Really. Purdue announced Wednesday that students who buy a VIP card (PDF) by June 10 will have their face featured in a collage inside the “P” logo for the “Social Media Game” on Sept. 27 vs. Iowa. [ MORE: Check out our uniform-centric Clothes Call section ] This is a creative idea, one that can only increase student ticket sales and student interest. It’s a win-win. Only question is, will other teams copy the idea? Or, maybe, do the same with
