Three Big Ten teams advance to second round of NCAA women’s tournament

Four Big Ten teams played in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament Friday, and three won to advance to the Round of 32.

No. 3 seed Maryland, No. 5 Ohio State and No. 9 Purdue all won their games to advance. No. 9 seed Michigan State fell to No. 8 Arizona State, 73-61.

In the first Big Ten action of the day, No. 3 Maryland set a school record for points in the NCAA tournament in a 103-61 blowout of No. 14 Bucknell. The Terps will move on to face No. 6 West Virginia on Sunday.

No. 5 seed Ohio State followed that up with a 70-63 win over No. 12 Western Kentucky. The Buckeyes will face No. 4 Kentucky on Sunday.

No. 9 seed Purdue made it three in a row for Big Ten teams with a 74-62 victory over Green Bay, and the Boilers will face No. 1 Notre Dame Sunday. Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp is coaching while battling breast cancer, and Purdue cheerleaders and players showed their support Friday.

No. 9 Michigan State was unable to complete the Big Ten sweep, as the Spartans fell 73-61 to No. 8 Arizona State. Senior Tori Jankoska closed out a fabulous career in East Lansing with another big game, scoring 26 points in the loss.
