Nigel Hayes, Nick Ward win weekly Big Ten hoops honors

The Big Ten office released its latest weekly Big Ten men’s basketball award winners Monday. See the latest honorees below.

Player of the Week: Nigel Hayes, Wisconsin, F – Sr. – 6-8

  • Averaged 18.5 points, 8.0 assists and 6.5 rebounds per game in leading the Badgers to a pair of wins over #22/24 Syracuse and Oklahoma, which both advanced to the 2016 Final Four
  • Shot 50.0 percent (12-of-24) from the field, including converting both of his three-point field goal attempts, and was 11-of-16 (.699) from the free-throw line
  • Came up just one point shy of a triple-double with nine points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds against Syracuse in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge
  • Poured in a game- and season-high 28 points on 8-of-13 shooting, and handed out six assists against zero turnovers versus the Sooners
  • Passed former standouts Devin Harris and Kirk Penney to move into 10th place on Wisconsin’s all-time scoring list
  • The two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection earns his first Big Ten Player of the Week nod

Freshman of the Week: Nick Ward, Michigan State, F – 6-8

  • Averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 assists per game in Michigan State’s contests at #5/4 Duke and versus Oral Roberts
  • For the week, shot 72.2 percent from the floor, connecting on 13-of-18 field goal attempts
  • Chipped in 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting and pulled down three rebounds against the Blue Devils
  • Posted a double-double in the win over Oral Roberts, recording season-highs with 24 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and a pair of steals
  • Earns his first Freshman of the Week honor
