For nearly 70 years now, the Fulbright Program has given scholarships, international exposure and professional opportunities to some of the brightest minds among university students and faculty the world over.

Historically, the Big Ten Conference has been well represented among Fulbright Scholars and Students, and this year is no exception. Five Big Ten universities had six faculty members apiece among U.S. Fulbright Scholars in 2014-5, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education, which placed them in a tie for fifth-place among all U.S. research institutions. Additionally, eight Big Ten member schools landed in the top 25 for U.S. Fulbright Students this academic year.

Here?s the tally of both Fulbright Scholars and Students for those universities in 2014-5:

U.S. Fulbright Scholars (six per university):

  • Michigan State University
  • The Ohio State University

U.S. Fulbright Students:

  • University of Michigan: 28
  • Northwestern University: 27
  • Rutgers University: 19
  • University of Minnesota: 16
  • The Ohio State University: 14
  • Penn State University: 13
  • University of Illinois: 13
  • University of Wisconsin: 13
