Four women's teams opened in the NCAA Women's Basketball tournament on Friday, highlighted by Iowa's 75-67 win over American.

In other action, Northwestern fell to Arkansas, 57-55, Nebraska lost a close one to Syracuse, 72-69, and Minnesota lost to DePaul, 79-72.

Ohio State, Rutgers and Maryland all play Saturday (see the full Saturday scoreboard).

Ashley Deary and Alex Cohen each had 13 points for No. 7 seed Northwestern (23-9), which was in its first NCAA Tournament since 1997.

IOWA 75, AMERICAN 67: BOX | RECAP
Ally Disterhoft scored 18 points, freshman Whitney Jennings had 16 and third-seeded Iowa held off American 75-67 Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Iowa City.

SYRACUSE 72, NEBRASKA 69: BOX | RECAP
Brianna Butler scored 17 points, including the go-ahead basket with 58.7 seconds left, to lift eighth-seeded Syracuse to a 72-69 victory over Nebraska on Friday night.

DEPAUL 79, MINNESOTA 72: BOX | RECAP
Megan Podkowa scored 23 points and No. 9 seed DePaul used a 22-4 second half run to come from behind and beat eighth-seeded Minnesota 79-72 in the first round of NCAA Tournament on Friday.
